Description	:	Robert graduated from the seminary at Poughkeepsie, NY and then went into the shoe business in New York. At age nineteen, he enlisted in Company B. 165 New York Volunteer Zouave regiment and served throughout the entire war until his discharge at Charleston, NC. After the war, Robert worked at the Harper Publishing Company before moving to Dakota Territory, first arriving in Elk Point, where his brother resided. After the war, Robert worked at the Harper Publishing Company before moving to Dakota Territory, first arriving in Elk Point, where his brother resided. Then, during the spring of 1870, he moved north to take a homestead, a preemption, and a tree claim. In 1873, he married Nancy Garwood; and, the couple lived on the wife's homestead until moving to Beresford in 1884. The couple adopted four children. Robert and Charles A. Potter organized the Bank of Beresford, which later became the Beresford State Bank. After the bank was sold, Robert moved to Wakonda for a short time before returning to Beresford to engage in real estate and insurance. Robert became postmaster in about 1898. After his wife's death, Robert lived with his children. He was survived by his four adopted children: Ray V. Bennett of Fergus Falls, MN; Mrs. Faith Jones of Osakis, MN; Mrs. Hope Klinkhammer of Ortonville; and Glenn K. Bennett of Albert Lea. As of 2002, Robert's grave was still unmarked.
