April 26, 1920-March 9, 2008 Surrounded by her loving family, Beth KARN, 87, of 1218 Pontiac St., Rochester, went home to be with the Lord at 6:45 a.m. Sunday. She died as a result of cancer, which was diagnosed in September of 2006. Born in rural Silver Lake, to Artie and Hazel Ball Carr, she grew up there and graduated from Silver Lake High School in 1937. Early on in life, Beth was intrigued by the medical field. It was at the age of 8 that she aspired and dreamed of some day becoming a nurse. Following her graduation from Silver Lake High School, she attended Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, now known as Parkview, in Fort Wayne, in pursuit of her dream. With great pride, in 1941, she graduated with a diploma as a registered nurse. Beth accepted her first nursing assignment at Woodlawn Hospital assisting her cousin, Dr. Milton Leckrone, as a surgical nurse. Dr. Leckrone owned the original Woodlawn Hospital at Seventh and Pontiac streets. As a life member of the Indiana Nurses Association, Beth served her colleagues as an officer for a number of years. On Sept. 4, 1945, Beth was united in marriage with local businessman and entrepreneur Harold Arthur Karn, owner of the Karn's Coffee Shop and Hotel. Shortly thereafter, she began raising her family and moved to the present-day residence on Pontiac Street. Beth continued nursing as a private-duty nurse and as the office nurse for Dr. E.V. Herendeen for several years until her children were older. She was relied on as the neighborhood nurse assisting injured and sick children and young families. In 1972, she was appointed to the position of Director of Nursing at Woodlawn Hospital. She held this post until her retirement in 1985, thus bringing to a close a career in nursing spanning nearly 4 1/2 decades. Beth actually mentored many of today's Woodlawn nursing staff. With a vision for the future, she assisted with the thoughtful design of the present-day Woodlawn as we know it. Private rooms, technology and Hill-Rom hospital beds were some of the essentials Beth insisted on implementing - keeping in mind patient comfort and care. Always aspiring to provide our community with the best healthcare, Mrs. Karn recognized the needs of home health care and was instrumental with encouraging her good friends, the Rev. Ron Purkey and his wife Sarah, also an R.N., to create a system of caring for those ill patients with a preference on being cared for at home. The Purkeys masterfully acted on and created Hope Hospice. With boundless energy, Beth was active in our community, serving at many capacities. Paramount in her life was her First Baptist Church family. As a member, she served the Lord and her church in a variety of ways. She was also a member of the Fulton County Literacy Coalition. She tutored many adult students with reading in the privacy of her home. She volunteered with youth at Head Start. The Red Cross Bloodmobile always counted on Beth to assist on donation days. An active member of the Republican Women's Club, Beth worked as a poll worker for Precinct 2 for numerous primaries and general elections. In May 1985, the Rochester Chamber of Commerce bestowed her with the Distinguished Citizen Award at her retirement reception for her dedication and service to our community. In addition to her dedication to her many patients over the years of her nursing career, she cherished the moments spent with her family and friends. Her outgoing personality, beautiful warm smile, joyous laughter and words of encouragement were a blessing to all she met. She loved Christ the Lord and her church family. As an avid angler, Beth embraced nature on the pristine waters of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Fishing for delectable panfish with her favorite casting rod, she could be easily spotted on the sparkling waters adorned with her signature red bandana. Many treasured family memories were made on these fishing expeditions. Beth is survived by her three children, a son, Richard Karn of Silver Lake, and twins, Jean Halfast and husband Greg of Rochester and Pastor John A. Karn and wife Sharon of Greenville, Ill.; three grandchildren, Eric Halfast and wife Jamie Howton, Alicia Halfast Scorsone and husband Michael, and Gretchen Lynne Jennings and husband Will; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Gladys Tully and husband Eugene, Fort Wayne. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Harold, who died May 16, 1971; two sisters, Mabel Bouse and Mary Waite; and two brothers, Rex Carr and Robert Carr. A celebration of the life of Roberta Beth Karn will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Rochester, with Dr. Mark Spencer officiating. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Good Family Funeral Home and at the church an hour prior to her services. Interment will follow next to her beloved husband, Harold A. Karn, at the Rochester IOOF Cemetery. Preferred memorials are to Hope Hospice of Fulton County, First Baptist Church or the Woodlawn Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship Fund.
