Description	:	Roberta Caroline Wilhelmina Nieman, age 92, of Clarksville, Iowa was born the only daughter of Alfred and Laura (Nordmeyer) Schmadeke on August 25, 1922, at home in Clarksville. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville. Roberta graduated from Clarksville High School in 1940. She continued her education at the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, Iowa and was a member of Alpha Iota Sorority. Read More	Roberta Caroline Wilhelmina Nieman, age 92, of Clarksville, Iowa was born the only daughter of Alfred and Laura (Nordmeyer) Schmadeke on August 25, 1922, at home in Clarksville. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville. Roberta graduated from Clarksville High School in 1940. She continued her education at the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, Iowa and was a member of Alpha Iota Sorority. Through the years she worked as a bookkeeper at Clarksville IPS, Clarksville Bank, Shields Bantam in Waverly, Iowa, from the late 1940's to early 1950's. Roberta was married to Corporal Melvin Benton on December 19, 1943, on Mather Air Field in California, at the Base Chapel. To this union two children were born David Lee and Kenneth Alfred Benton. The couple was later divorced in 1951. On July 10, 1955, Roberta was married to William Gerhardt Nieman at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Clarksville. To this union were born two sons Alan William and Michael Jon Nieman. Roberta welcomed her two step children, Pricilla Louise and Eugene David Nieman, into her new family. The couple spent their life farming near Clarksville and raising their family. Roberta served the American Cancer Society for 30 years; she served as the church organist over 40 years at the First United Church of Christ - Pleasant Valley in rural Clarksville; and was active in many other church functions. She also was a member of Clarksville Nursing Home Auxiliary. Roberta loved to sew, do needle work and was an accomplished seamstress. She enjoyed gardening and raising flowers. She had a special passion for music especially playing the piano and organ. Roberta died Monday, December 8, 2014, at the Westside Assisted Living Suites in Clarksville. She was preceded in death by her husband, William (Bill) Nieman on April 26, 2003; and two sons, Kenneth in 2007 and David in 2011. Roberta is survived by two sons, Alan Nieman of Clarksville, and Michael (Sandy) Nieman of Paola, KS; a daughter-in-law, Sharon; two step-children, Priscilla Nieman of Waterloo, and Eugene (Sherri) Nieman of Nashua; six grandchildren, Toni Lynn, James, Matthew, Derek, Adam and Travis; and six great-grandchildren, Stephen, Kristen, Michael, Lejla, William and Mila. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, at the First United Church of Christ – Pleasant Valley with burial in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery both in rural Clarksville. Visitation will be from 4:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. Thursday, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville, (319)278-4245, and one hour before services at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family of Roberta Nieman.
