Description	:	Bertie passed away peacefully on February 1, 2013 in Spokane, Washington, surrounded and loved by her three children. Bertie was born on January 12, 1935 in Omak, Washington to Irene Mae (Ludwig) and Alva Benjamin "Shorty" Cumbo. She was the only daughter out of five children. Bertie graduated from Chewelah High School (now Jenkins High School) in 1953. Read More	Bertie passed away peacefully on February 1, 2013 in Spokane, Washington, surrounded and loved by her three children. Bertie was born on January 12, 1935 in Omak, Washington to Irene Mae (Ludwig) and Alva Benjamin "Shorty" Cumbo. She was the only daughter out of five children. Bertie graduated from Chewelah High School (now Jenkins High School) in 1953. After high school, Bertie married James "Jim" Ashbaugh Sr. in November 1953 and remained married until they split in 1977. They had three children together and made many moves throughout Northeastern Washington and Northern Idaho, where Bertie served as a cook at numerous restaurants until they moved to Spokane's South Hill in 1969. After moving to Spokane, Bertie worked as a cook for Marriott for the Community Colleges of Spokane for 35 years before retiring in 2004. Bertie also volunteered for MDA Camp at Camp Larson in Worley, Idaho for 15 years and she was very involved with Safeway bake sales and Challenged Kids Softball and Playball picnics (Spokane Parks and Recreation: Therapeutic Recreational Services funded). Bertie also enjoyed growing and canning fruits and vegetables, attending and cheering for the Spokane Chiefs, walking around Manito Park, and spending time with her friends and family. All of these things made her the happiest. Bertie is survived by her three children, two children-in-laws, seven grandchildren, two grandchildren-in-laws, and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her twin brother, two sister-in-laws, her cat Charlie, a sister of the heart, a daughter of the heart and her family, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, who touched her life throughout the years and that will miss her dearly. Bertie was predeceased in death by her parents, brothers: Howard (Byrdie) Cumbo, Floyd Cumbo, and Dale (Margie) Cumbo, and her aunt/sister figure: Eleanor (Millard) Zimmerman. The family would like to thank "A Peaceful Place II" for their wonderful love and support for Bertie during the last two years of her life. Funeral service was held on May 18, 2013 at the Chewelah Memorial Park, along with a reception at the Rebekah Hall #162 after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Horizon Hospice of Spokane, The Alzheimer's Association, or a charity of your choice.
