He immigrated to America in 1852 with his parents. They first settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where they lived for five years. He came to Ida County on December 6, 1875, and bought his first quarter section of land, the home farm, in Silver Creek township for $772.00. The lumber for the first building was hauled from Storm Lake, the nearest railroad.... Read More	Baxter, Robinson G. 1850-1927 Father Ida Co., IA Biography - written by Mrs. Lou Baxter THE BAXTER FAMILY -- Robinson George Baxter was born in County Fermanagh, Ireland, February 28, 1850. He immigrated to America in 1852 with his parents. They first settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where they lived for five years. He came to Ida County on December 6, 1875, and bought his first quarter section of land, the home farm, in Silver Creek township for $772.00. The lumber for the first building was hauled from Storm Lake, the nearest railroad. He at once started to plant trees as there were no trees in Silver Creek township due to past prairie fires. His neighbors at first were James Burrows, Henry Dickson, James Dunn and the Freeman family. Esther Ann Scanlon Baxter was born in County Langford, Ireland, May 8, 1851. She came with her parents to America in 1867, settling in Silver Creek, Delaware County, Iowa. She married Robinson Baxter at Manchester, Iowa and came to Silver Creek, where they lived until moving to Ida Grove in March 1919. Mr. Baxter was a typical early settler and had opinions on all questions of the day. He stood for the best in civic matters, the home and education. He provided each of his six children with a college education. He had great faith in the future of agriculture in Iowa. To the Baxters were born six children: (1) Lillie Jane, 1878-1957; (2) James Robinson, 1879-1962; (3) Urban Scanlon, 1882-1975; (4) William George, 1885-1958; (5) Robinson B., 1890; and (6) Luke J., 1892. All six children attended school in the one room school house No. 5 in Silver Creek Township which still stands. Mr. Baxter died January 27, 1927, and Mrs. Baxter December 28, 1933, and are buried in the Ida Grove Cemetery.
