Barber, dentist, and Maude V. Hulse Barber. His siblings were Mary Marjorie (Robinson), Frederick W. Jr., and Maude Amelia "Amy" McGrath. He was born and raised in McPherson, Kansas, the third of 4 children of Dr. Frederick W. Barber, dentist, and Maude V. Hulse Barber. His siblings were Mary Marjorie (Robinson), Frederick W. Jr., and Maude Amelia "Amy" McGrath. Dr. Barber died suddenly of a heart attack with Rob was only 8-1/2. Rob lived nearly 31 years at the family home in the center of McPherson, except for one year on his sister's ranch nearby. He was generally called "Hulse" by his relatives on both sides, but "Rob" by east coast neighbors, co-workers, and church friends. He earned a business degree from the local McPherson college in 1929, enjoyed playing the Viola and violin in amateur orchestras, and was a Masonic member. He was proud of hiking to the top of Pikes Peak in the Rockies in 1927 while attending a science camp. After several unpromising short-term jobs during the Great Depression, Rob moved east to Washington, D.C. in 1937 for a career in the U.S. Commerce Department (Near East - South Asia trade regulations division). He flourished there, being active in a church choir, a Boy Scout adult leader, going on Wanderbirds hiking club trips, and playing Viola in the Washington Civic Symphony. He boasted of how after living in the city for only 3 short months, his church choir was chosen to sit very close to President Roosevelt at the annual December outdoor tree-lighting ceremony. In 1944 he married Annie May Davis, a materials testing engineer at the U.S. Navy Bureau of Ships. They had met at a dance. Ann's parents and most of her siblings (several of them teachers) are also buried at this cemetery. Her biography is also on this site. In 1948 Rob and Ann had a house built in Forest Heights / Oxon Hill, Maryland, and in 1950 bought their first ever automobile and had their only son, Winfield Davis Barber. Rob was a Presbyterian church Elder, choir member, Sunday school teacher, Scout merit badge tester, and President of the local Ostomy patients club. After several surgeries for bladder cancer, he wore disposable ostomy bags for an amazing 48 years. He was a mild-mannered, gentle soul who loved for many decades, Readers Digest, Guideposts magazine, and attending National Geographic travelog film lectures in Washington. He kept a very short, daily diary for an amazing 70 years. My father instilled in me a love of classical orchestral music (he had a large record collection), educational travel and sightseeing, church attendance, riding trains, and civic involvement. He was loyal to his hometown, visiting Kansas every few years, usually by train, and in later years by plane. He toured Europe in 1975 and 77, and also attended 4 World's Fairs over his lifetime. His last years were spent at the Sunrise Home near Fairfax Circle, Virginia. At that time he also had 2 young granddaughters.
