Roderick Ronald Russell was born November 12, 1946 to Jennie Louise (Hardee) and Galen Frank Russell at Elmo, Missouri. He died April 8, 2014 at Oakland Manor in Oakland, Iowa. He was 67 years, 4 months, and 27 days old. As a boy he liked roaming the pastures and woodlands and playing in the barn of the family farm near Parnell, Missouri. He swam in the farm pond and made pets of the bullfrogs and snakes found there. The one-room Wilcox School was where he began his education. In 1958 it closed and he attended sixth grade at Ravenwood. When the family moved to a farm near Villisca, Iowa, Rod finished his middle school and high school education, graduating in 1964. Going to reunions gave him the opportunity to reminisce with classmates about a happy time in his life when he continued his interest in science, played football, basketball, and ran track. He attended Clarinda Community College before transferring to Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona graduating in 1968. He then entered the Air Force and flew 570 hours of combat missions over Viet Nam from a base in Thailand and served until 1980. During that time, planes he flew landed at air bases at Torrejon, Spain; Incerlik, Turkey; Mildenhall, England; Thule, Greenland; Eielson, Alaska; Hickam, Hawaii; Kadena in Okinawa, Japan; Anderson, Guam; Clark, Philippines; U-Tapao, Thailand, Diego Garcia, Indian Ocean and various bases in the United States. During these trips, he took advantage of the opportunity to tour those places and regaled us with stories about cheering the Spanish Bullfighters, being awestruck by English Medieval Cathedrals, and walking on icebergs in Greenland. He told about flying a tanker that refueled the SR-71 and loved seeing the "Black Bird" at the SAC Museum. After the Air Force, he graduated from Chiropractic College in Los Angeles, California and as class president, planned the reception. During those years, he served in the California Air National Guard. Then he practiced in Phoenix, Arizona and later moved to the Navajo Reservation with clinics in Window Rock, Keyente, and Chinle. In 1982 he had a brief marriage to Sieglinde Ritter whom he met in Clarinda during junior college. He also had a ten-year relationship with Julia Jones who was a wonderful companion until her death. A brain tumor forced him into retirement in 2004, but he continued to live in Ft. Defiance, Arizona and appreciated spectacular sunsets, gorgeous red rocks, and fresh air. He valued the Navajo culture, collected rugs, jewelry, and art over the years, contributed to the Navajo Museum in Window Rock and supported the local rodeo and basketball teams. He worshipped with his friends at Mount Michael's Baptist Church where he was a member. In December 2013, when circumstances made living alone impossible, Rod returned to the Midwest to the love and companionship of his many relatives whom he leaves behind to grieve: His sister Gayle Strickland and her husband Robert, Oakland, IA, his niece Jenna Strickland and husband Adam Schlismann and great-nephews Jack and Tom Schlismann, El Centro, CA; his aunts and uncles Emory Jr. and Doris Hardee, Bedford, IA; Cathy Hardee, Corning, IA; Ron and Betty Hardee, Belton, MO; Smith and Shirley Hardee, Belton, MO; Naomi and Paul Reed, Waukee, IA; Betty Russell, Mound City, MO. Over fifty first cousins and numerous friends including the staff at Oakland Manor will also miss him. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jennie and Galen Russell, Clarinda, IA; his grandparents Joe and Nell Russell, Pickering, MO, and Emory and MaryBelle Hardee, Clarinda, IA and his dear friend Julia Jones, Chilchimpitoe, AZ.; Aunts and Uncles: Raymond and Ella Russell, Sabetha, KS; Helen and Earl Snodderly, Clearmont, MO; Emmett Russell, Omaha, NE; Lee Russell, Mound City, MO; Mary and Art Kenning, Mesa, AZ, Marjorie Gear, Phoenix, AZ, Lola Jean and Ray Burns, Roseville, MI; Bob and Beverly Hardee, Bedford, IA, Inez and Carroll Hulbert, Belton, Mo.; Iris and Dorman Milligan, Vancouver, WA.
