Rodney Arthur Johnson was born January 21, 1959 at Burke, South Dakota and he died July 3, 2008 at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dak. at the age of 49 years, 5 months, and 12 days. Rodney 'Hot Rod' was the third son born to Raymond A. and Dorothy Jean (Benter) Johnson. He lived his entire life in Burke. He attended the Burke Public School, graduating in 1977. Hot Rod worked for Leibel and Bauld Construction doing carpentry work. He worked road construction for Sands Construction, Schweigert Construction and AG&E Construction, running a push cat and other equipment. His true passion was for hunting and fishing, teaching his nieces just how to do it right. In May, Hot Rod, Ronnie, Randy, Rick, Craig, and Doug took a fishing trip to Canada, something he had always wanted to do. After a health episode in 2003, Hot Rod was given a new lease on life. He worked his road construction job for Zandstra Construction of Rapid City in the summer months and over the winter months he drove for Silver Fox Shuttle. His passengers became a big part of his life, almost like family. Rodney was given the name 'Hot Rod' by a family friend for the way he could peddle his little yellow car, a birthday gift. His brothers picked up on the nickname and it seemed to fit him well the rest of his life. Rodney was preceded in death by his father, Ray, and by his grandparents. Grateful for having shared his life and surviving Hot Rod are his mom, Dorothy Jean, his brothers; his nieces, nephews and great-nieces; as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
