WESTBROOK -- Rod McConkey, 75, of Westbrook, passed away in his home Monday, March 10, 2008. He was born in Westbrook April 8, 1932, the son of Frank and Beulah McConkey. He was a graduate of Westbrook High School, class of 1950, and the University of Maine at Orono, class of 1954, where he graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant. A dedicated and disciplined man, McConkey spent two tours in Vietnam, as well as served at Fort Benning, Fort Myers, Fort Devens and Fort McPherson. He attended Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. Over his 24 years of Army service, McConkey served as the U.S. Army Company Commander in Virginia, Secretary to General Staff at Fort McPherson for four years and Director of Personnel and Community Affairs for three years in Japan. Upon returning from Japan, McConkey retired from service with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Whether it was during his service in the Army or as a civilian, McConkey had a talent for working with and managing people. During both his service and as a civilian he taught others, holding positions at Wichita State University and Freeport High School. His personable nature and talent helped him after retiring from the Army when he started working in the hotel business. His first hotel job came with Western Peach Street Plaza Hotels where he worked in a variety of capacities. Next, McConkey worked for Renaissance hotels in Human Resources where he wrote hotel protocols and traveled to the openings of the new hotels. At the time of his retirement, McConkey worked with Ritz Carlton as the Corporate Director of Human Resources. In 1991 McConkey and his wife retired, for good, to his hometown of Westbrook. McConkey was always a go-to-go guy, an honest man; one person everyone went to in order to get the story straight. He will be greatly missed and remembered as a wonderful, talented man, who had the ability to help guide and advise others. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, March 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Blais and Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home, on Monday, March 17 at 11 a.m., followed by a graveside memorial service at Woodlawn Cemetery, Westbrook.
