Description	:	Funeral services for Rod Slonecker age 66 of Wisner, NE will be Wednesday, December 10th at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wisner, NE. Burial will be in the Wisner Cemetery with Military Honors by American Legion Post #85 and V.F.W. Post #5767 of Wisner, NE. Rodney Gene Slonecker was born June 8, 1942 to Errol and Lillian (Horn) Slonecker at West Point, Nebraska. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith in West Point, Nebraska. Rod was confirmed in that faith at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wisner, Nebraska, where he was an active member. Following his kindergarten year the family moved to rural, Wisner where he attended rural District #39. The Slonecker family moved into Wisner the following year and Rod completed all but his senior year at Wisner High School. In 1959 his family moved to Pilger, NE where he attended Pilger High School, and graduated in 1960. In May of 1960 Rod entered the United States Navy, serving abroad the USS Duncan, USS Robert L. Wilson, and the USS Storms. He was honorably discharged in 1963. He also served in the Army Reserve for several years. Following his military service, Rod was employed in construction with the building of Merritt Reservoir in Valentine, NE, Union Pacific Railroad, Barner T.V. Repair in Wayne, NE and the Norfolk Regional Center. He was later employed for 17 years by Sears and Roebuck and the Nebraska Department of Roads for 27 years, retiring in 2008. On April 17, 1964 he was united in marriage to Janice Chamberlin at St. John Lutheran Church in Pilger, NE. To that union was born five children, Keri (Casey) Foster of Sparks, NE, Jodi Slonecker of Pilger, NE, Julie Richtig of Columbia, TN, Marc (Gina) Slonecker of Fairfield, CA, and Michael Slonecker and his friend Artemisia Wiggins of Fayetteville, NC. Rod and Jan lived in Norfolk until 1979 when they moved to an acreage near Pilger, NE. With the closing of the Pilger Rest area in 1985, the family moved to Beemer, NE. In 1996 Rod and Jan bought his family home and returned to Wisner, NE. He is survived by his wife Jan, five children, 13 grandchildren, one great granddaughter, one sister Verna (Carl) Freese of Edenton, NC, sister-in-law Jeanette Uehling of Norfolk, NE, brother-in-law Dale and LaRayne Topp of Wisner, NE and many special nieces, nephews and faithful friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather Henry Sila, granddaughter Ashley Miller, three brothers Norman, William and Lannie, sister Judi Topp, and a nephew Clay Freese. Rod was involved in his community as a Boy Scout Leader, the Big Brother-Big Sister Program, Teammates, and was active in his church. His beautiful voice could be heard in many area Cantata's as well as weddings, funerals and the church choir. His great love was his family, teaching his grandchildren about nature, fishing, hunting, and football. He enjoyed walking his dog Moose at the Wisner River Park. He also enjoyed bowling, working with wood, building furniture for his family, restoring things that had meaning to others and his daily crossword puzzle
