He joined his brother Rick and later his two sisters Rochel and Roxanne were born to complete the home. He grew up in Williams and later moved to Iowa Falls where he graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1975. In 1975 he met Vicki Greenfield and fell in love. Early in 1977 came their first son Travis. On March 6, 1979 he and Vicki were married shortly before their second son Jared was born. Two years later they were blessed with a third child, daughter Megan. While raising his beautiful children he continued his education with a driving degree from Hawkeye Tech in Waterloo, Iowa. After graduating from Hawkeye Tech he assumed a driving position with Schneider International. After several years of driving cross country for Schneider he realized he would rather spend time with his wife and children so he took a job driving for Dallas Wagoner Trucking. He did that for several years and then took his most recent job working at CMC Joist. Rod enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, and many grandchildren. His time away from the family was spent at Meadow Hills golfing. Rod was survived by his wife, Vicki, brother Rick Hoversten, sister Rochel Hoversten, his son Travis, his son Jared and daughter in law Samantha, his daughter Megan and son and law Russ, his extended daughter Erin and husband Erich Harksen, his extended daughter Megan and husband Kevin Bruns; He is also survived by his most prized possessions his grand children: Jordan, Kaydence, Tanner, Gage, Devon, Paige, Holden, Daisy, and McKenna. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace and Shirley Hoversten and sister, Roxanne Hoversten Kelly.
