All memorials sent to the family will ensure Roger’s greatest passion continues to improve year after year - the annual Blue Hill 4th of July fireworks celebration. Merten-Butler Mortuary Blue Hill, is in charge of arrangements. Roger was born March 6, 1947, in Hastings to Gilbert and Anna (Schutte) Schunk. He graduated from Blue Hill High School in 1965. In 1966, Roger enlisted in the United States Army. The Army sent him to Seoul, Korea, and then to Fort Belvoir, VA. Roger was honorably discharged in 1969. On Oc. 21, 1967, Roger married LaRae Heinrich in Blue Hill. They resided in Virginia until 1969, before returning to Nebraska. The couple lived in Hastings until moving to Blue Hill in 1979 before building their family home. Roger began working at Hastings Industries in 1969 and continued there until his retirement in 2001. Some of Rogers’s hobbies included demolition derbies, attending his children and grandchildren’s activities, and morning coffee. Roger was an active member of the American Legion – Arthur L. Shirley Post #176 and the Blue Hill Golf Association. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church and a 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus. Roger’s passion was entertaining young and old each year by leading the fireworks display for the past 47 years at the annual 4th of July Celebration in Blue Hill. Roger was a skilled handyman and always willing to lend a helping hand. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Roger is preceded in death by his parents. Roger is survived by his spouse of 49 years, LaRae; their children and grandchildren, Keri Schunk and Tim Alber of Blue Hill, Mike and Natalie Schunk (Trey, Kristen, Karlie) of Eagle, Tara and Ryan Kohmetscher (Anna, Cami) of Dardenne Prairie, MO, Terry Schunk and Erin Marick (Clay) of Holstein; one sister, Judy and Ken Buschow of Shawnee, KS; two brother-in-laws, Ron and Andrea Heinrich of Omaha, Clynn and Bev Heinrich of Rochester Hills, MI; two sister-in-laws, Taren and Bob Hoffman of Adams, Tami and Richard Pickel of Hastings; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
