He was the son of: John and Augusta (Knoll) Edel, the third of eight children. After graduating from Saint Mary's High School, he served in the Navy at the end of World War II and had fond memories of time stationed in Italy. Following his discharge, he briefly attended Saint Thomas College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and then returned to Marshalltown, where he married Rita Quinn on September 8, 1947. Mr. Edel went to work for his new father-in-law: Anthony Quinn, and eventually owned and operated Quinn Radiator for 30 years before opening Quinn Lawn and Leisure. Upon his retirement, he managed the Knights of Columbus Hall for several years. Roger was a 50-year member of the Knights of Columbus, a Fourth-Degree Knight, and served as Grand Knight, 1961-1962. He served the Marshalltown community as a dedicated member of Saint Mary's and Saint Henry's parishes and, during Lenihan High School's five years of operation, he was an active booster and involved parent. Roger Charles Edel, age: 83, passed away on January 18, 2011 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown; Marshall County, Iowa, following a long illness. Those left to mourn his passing are: His wife of 63 years: Rita of Marshalltown, Iowa; his eight children: Anthony (Carol) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Donald of Marshalltown, Iowa; Thomas (Jeanine) of Chicago, Illinois; Lawrence (Sveta) of Arlington Heights, Illinois; Mary (Thomas) Skorczeski of Saint Paul, Minnesota; Richard (Geof Shives) of Chicago, Illinois; David (Kathy) of Waupaca, Wisconsin and Carol (Todd) Geil of Knoxville, Iowa. His seventeen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Also his sisters: Arvalene Vasek of Omaha, Nebraska; Maxine (George) Liston and Jeanette (Keith) Loney both of Marshalltown, Iowa. Mr. Edel was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers. May they rest in peace. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
