Roger was born July 12, 1939 at rural Palmer, Iowa to Rudy and Ida (Janssen) Poppen. He graduated from Manson High School in 1957 and received his B.S. Agriculture Business degree from Iowa State University in Ames in 1963. He married Phyllis MacDonald on July 8, 1956 in Manson, IA. Roger was employed by Hertz Farm Management Real Estate. Roger was a member and past president of Bethesda Lutheran Church, Ames, served as chair of Land Value Study Committee of Iowa Land Study Institute, president of Iowa Jaycees 1969-1970, Jaycee National Chaplain 1970-71, member of Ames Noon Rotary, ISU Alumni Assoc. and Order of the Knoll, Outstanding young Alum at ISU in 1975, member of Iowa and American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers, Iowa and National Asosciation of REALTORS, Iowa and National REALTORS Land Institute and Central State Farm Multiple Listing. He served as president of the Iowa Chapter Relators Land Institute in 1976 and was honored as Farm and Land Broker of the year in 1978. He was a certified instructor for the state and national agriculture real estate course for the Iowa Association of REALTORS and the National REALTORS Land Institute. Preceding him in death were his parents; two sons, Tom in 1970 and Curt in 1962. Those that survive him include his wife, Phyllis of Ames; two daughters, Terri (Dean) Haaland of Perry and Kimber (Roger) Jackson of Johnston; two sons, Jim Poppen and fiance' Marie Fisher of West Des Moines and David Knight (Lexie) of German-town, MD; two sisters, Jean (Paul) Carey of Omaha, NE and Deanne (Steve) Byers of Elgin, IL, three brothers, Marvin (Carolyn) of Manson, Corliss (Shirley) of Rolfe and Dallas (Sharon) of Burnsville, MN; nine grandchildren, Nick, Kiera and Thomas Haaland, Ashley, Drew and Dakota Jackson, India, Kennedy and Sydney Knight.
