Roger E. Whittig, age 81, of Lake of the Woods, Hudson died on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at Lutheran Life Villages, Kendallville, Indiana.
Roger was born in Hudson, Indiana on December 19, 1932 to the late Charles Whittig and Esther (Clay) Whittig.
He graduated from Salem Center High School in 1951. He tried out for the Detroit Tigers following high school graduation.

Roger E. Whittig, age 81, of Lake of the Woods, Hudson died on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at Lutheran Life Villages, Kendallville, Indiana.
Roger was born in Hudson, Indiana on December 19, 1932 to the late Charles Whittig and Esther (Clay) Whittig.
He graduated from Salem Center High School in 1951. He tried out for the Detroit Tigers following high school graduation.
In 1951, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving his country for four years during the Korean War and was stationed in the Phillipines. He played baseball on the Air Force team during his service. Upon returning home, he studied at Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne earning a Civil Engineering degree. He also played baseball and basketball at Indiana Tech.
Roger was a civil engineer and employed with the Indiana Highway Department as a traffic engineer.
He married Sandra J. Andrews on December 28, 1985 in Orland, Indiana.
Roger was an avid Indiana University basketball fan and he also loved following the Detroit Tigers and enjoyed watching NASCAR. Also he helped Hank Lower’s pit crew with his winged sprint car racing. Roger loved cutting for his wood burning fireplace and being outdoors. He was a life member of the Orland American Legion Post #423.
Survivors include: His wife, Sandra Whittig of Lake of the Woods, Hudson; Daughters, Louise and Paul Kennedy of Ashley and Amy and Larry Beer of Hudson. Grandchildren: Dale Kennedy and Alison Kennedy of Ashley; Amelia and Jeremy Swander of Hudson and Bradley and Emilee Beer of Hudson. Three great grandchildren: Charlotte and Catherine Swander and Eli C. Beer. Step daughter, Lorraine and Doug LeMay of Lake of the Woods, Hudson. Step son, Robert Hillier and Jackie Bender-Hillier of Kendallville. Step grandchildren: Jake and Jordon LeMay of Lake of the Woods; Dustin and Brittney Hillier of Angola and Desiree Hillier of Big Long Lake. Step great granddaughter, Sydney Hillier.
He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Dorthea Loucks and Martha Fifer and his brother, Robert Whittig.
There will be a Celebration of Life gathering will be held Sunday, November 16, 2014 from 1-4:00pm at Orland American Legion Post #423, 211 Bronson Street in Orland, Indiana. |
