Read More	Morrill — Roger Ernest Roberts, 66, died at home with his family by his side Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008, one day short of his 67th birthday, after a long, exhausting battle with prostate cancer. He was born Jan. 7, 1941, at his family home in Morrill, where he has lived his whole life. He received his early education at the old one-room schoolhouse in Morrill, graduating from Crosby High School in 1959. On Dec. 21, 1963, he married his wife of 44 years, Dawn Mary Melville. He was one of the fortunate few who was able to pursue the passion of his life — cows. He was able to continue farming on his father's dairy farm, "Quantaview Farm in Morrill," for more than 49 years. He began milking cows in 1953 at age 12 when his dad died. He continued selling milk until his retirement in 2002. Roger continued to sell heifers for a few years and continued haying until this past summer. He also worked for many years as a cattle breeder for Maine Breeding Association and Eastern Breeder Association. Roger had been a member of the Masons and received his 40-year pin Monday, Aug. 27, 2007, in a short ceremony while in the hospital. He was a past president and member of the Board of Directors of the Farm Bureau Association for more than 10 years. He held positions on the board of the ASC office as well as the Eastern Breeder Association. In March 2007, Roger retired from the first selectman's job with the town off Morrill, a position he had held for 22 years. Also during those years, he worked diligently to obtain and repair the Morrill Grange Hall for the use of the town of Morrill. Roger was an active member of the Morrill Historical Society. The Morrill Harvest Festival was an idea that he was so glad to see come to life. It pleased him tremendously to see the turnout of Morrill residents and neighbors who came together for the town's festival. After retiring, much of Grampa's time was spent tending to his flower gardens and attending his grandchildren's events, games and participating in the many family functions. He enjoyed hunting deer and turkeys, as well as watching them. He will be remembered for a lifetime of generosity and commitment to his family, friends and community and always for his stupendous flower gardens. He always had a flower, a bouquet, seeds or knowledge to hand out to anyone interested. Rarely did he arrive anywhere without a bouquet in hand of special "homegrown with love" flowers; whether it be to a birthday party, a wedding, a random visit, a doctor's appointment or anniversary — there were always flowers. Over the years there have always been animals — cats, horses, pigs, bunnies, sheep, dogs, chickens and other assorted animals of all shapes and sizes running around the farm. Many nieces and nephews spent their summers, weekends and/or holidays working on the farm. At any Roberts' family gathering you will always hear the reminiscing of teenage years working on the farm. Roger is survived by his wife of 44 years, Dawn Mary (Melville) Roberts of Morrill; daughter, Robin Webster and husband, Ralph, of Searsmont; son, Dana Roberts of Morrill; daughter, Paula Roberts of Vienna, W.Va.; sisters, Ella Work and husband, Guy, of Monroe, Marion Woods and husband, Mac of Belfast, Norma Woodbury and husband, Francis, of Morrill, Lucille Fox and husband, Neil, of Florida, and Margaret Littlefield and husband, Hugh, of Morrill; sisters-in-law, Viola Roberts of Portland and Sue Janosco and husband, Michael, of Lewiston; former daughter-in-law, Anne Shenett Roberts; brother-in-law, Randy Melville and wife, Vicki of Greene; stepmother-in-law, Ada Melville of Bath; grandchildren, Derek Webster and wife, Angie, of Northport, Jeremy Roberts and girlfriend, Morgan, of Searsmont, Jami Webster of Searsmont, Micheala Roberts of Vienna, W.Va., Dylan Webster of Searsmont, and Wyatt Roberts and Walker Roberts of Morrill; "Auntie" Sharon and "Uncle" Harold of Burlington, Conn.; special nephews, David Gatchell of Idaho and Ernie Roberts of Portland; plus all the nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews that make up the Roberts family circle — all 50-plus of you were equally special in Uncle Roger's heart. He was predeceased by his parents, Ernest Tucker Roberts in 1953 and Agnes Myrtle Cram Roberts in 1972; brothers, Ernest Roberts and Levi Roberts; sisters, Ernestine Riley, Frances Dolloff and Mary Roberts; father-in-law, Franklin Melville; brothers-in-law, George Gatchell, Robert Dolloff and George Riley; mother-in-law, Shirley Melville; and niece, Shanna.
