He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. He grew up in the Badger area and attended Common School District 19. He graduated from Lake Preston High School in 1961 and then attended trade school in Omaha, NE, where he studied auto mechanics. He entered the Army National Guard with the 741st Transportation Unit and served six years with the De Smet and Brookings units until being honorably discharged in 1970. He married Karen Wendel Aug 10, 1968, and they had two children. They were involved in farming until their retirement in 2008. After living on their farm for 34 years, they moved to Lake Preston in 2002. He was a member of the Lake Preston United Church of Christ, where he served on the church council. He was also involved with the Kingsbury County Crop Improvement Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching television and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He and his wife enjoyed traveling in their fifth-wheel camper. They spent several winters touring the southern part of the United States and enjoyed smaller trips with their family in the summer. Survivors include his wife, Karen; one son, Brian (Judy) Carlson of Hetland; one daughter, Tina (Craig) Wilken of Akron, Iowa; six grandchildren; his mother, Maxine Carlson of De Smet; his mother-in-law, Violet Wendel of De Smet; one brother, Eldred (Shirley) Carlson of Lake Preston; and one sister, Marilyn Knapp of Apple Valley, MN.
