Following private services at his home, his cremains will be scattered on his beloved mountains. The Clifton Funeral Home, Earlville, provided the information. Schmitz, 47, of Bailey, Colo., formerly of Earlville, died after battling pancreatic cancer for the past year, Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at home. Following private services at his home, his cremains will be scattered on his beloved mountains. The Clifton Funeral Home, Earlville, provided the information. He was born on Dec. 21, 1952, at Willard General Hospital, Manchester, son of Howard L. and Mary Lou (Gibbs) Schmitz. He married Wan Ping Hu, also known as Wendy Ranson, on Feb. 9, 1995, at the home of the bride's mother in Paipei, Taiwan. They repeated their vows in an American ceremony before a group of relatives and friends in their beautiful mountain home in Bailey on Feb. 10, 1996. He graduated from Maquoketa Valley High School, Delhi, in 1971, and Iowa State University, Ames, in 1973, with an associate's degree in electronics. He worked at Franken Engineering Co., Sioux Center, until moving to Denver, Colo., in 1978. Roger continued his study toward an electrical-engineering degree while working as an electronic technician and electrical draftsman. He was a longtime employee in the engineering department of the Johns Manville Co., Denver. Roger loved the mountains and spent many hours hiking and photographing their beauty. Roger will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Surviving are his wife, Wendy; his parents, Howard and Mary Lou Schmitz, of Earlville; a brother and a sister-in-law, Alan and Joyce Schmitz; and nephews, Andrew and Daniel Schmitz, all of Stout. He was preceded in death by an infant brother, David, in 1956; paternal grandparents, Phillip L. and Esther (Hunt) Schmitz; and his maternal grandparents, Daniel C. and Clara (Burrow) Gibbs and Frank and Millie (Ensign) Brown. Memorials may be given to the Roger Schmitz Memorial Fund at the Maquoketa Valley Chapter Dollars for Scholars, P.O. Box 186, Delhi, Iowa 52223-0186.
