Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, March 22, 2010 at Heitmeyer Funeral Home in Continental, Ohio. Burial will follow in Monroe Cemetery with full mili-tary honors provided by the Continental American Legion. Wayne was born in Florence County, SC. He was the son of Alice Matthews and the late Carter Matthews. Wayne retired after 40 years with New Millennium Building Systems of Continental, Ohio. He was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church and was a Veteran of the United States Army serving in the 557th MP Company at Long Bihn and was a guard at the Long Bihn Jail. He was a member of the Continental American Legion Post 541, a court appointed special advocate for children in Putnam and Allen Counties, a Syndoical Authorized Minister with the Evangelical Lutheran Church, charter member of the Continental Lions Club, 40 year member of the Free and Accepted Masons in South Carolina and Ohio, a former member of the High Hill Baptist Church in Scranton, SC. Surviving include his mother of Scranton, SC; wife, Wendy Jo Noffsinger Matthews of Continental; his sons, Alexander (Rebekah) Matthews of Lima, Shannon (Denise) Matthews of Cloverdale and Jason Matthews of Dayton; his brother, Rick (Eula Mae) Matthews of Darlington; and his sister, Betty (Larry) Corkwell of Continental; and two grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Continental EMS or Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center. Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home of Darlington is in charge of local arrangements.
