A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Armstrong Chapel in Mapleton. Roger Wilton McDole was born May 8, 1935 at Dunlap, Iowa, the son of Wilton and Genevieve (Knutson) McDole. He was baptized and confirmed at the Soldier Lutheran Church. He attended country school and in the fifth grade went to school in Soldier, graduating from Soldier High School with the class of 1953. He moved to Omaha, Nebraska where he worked for Sutherland Lumber Company. On April 20, 1957, Roger was united in marriage to Marilyn Gibbs in Moorhead, Iowa. This union was blessed with two children, Cheri and Doug. In 1960, they returned to Soldier, where he began his life's work in farming which he continued to do for 46 years. Along with farming, he worked as a field man for the (ASC) Farmer Service Agency since the 1960's, first taking corn at the government bin sites and most recently measuring bins. Starting in 1984, Roger became a hail adjuster for Farmer's Mutual Hail Insurance Company. He enjoyed the work, talking to farmers, and most of all, his coworkers. He carried a devotion for the farmers he worked with, his employers, his neighbors, friends, and especially his wife, Marilyn and his children, Doug and Cheri and her husband, Brad. In the later years, his love for the sport of rodeo grew. He would attend a rodeo whenever he could and could tell you the world standings in each event. Traveling to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nevada was always the highlight of his December. As a loving husband and father, Roger was never too busy to stop and attend one of Cheri and Doug's many sporting events during their school years and as they grew the family became involved in 4-H and open steer shows. He followed the kids along with the steers to eight different states while they were showing cattle. With the involvement of 4-H, Roger joined the Monona County Fair Board in 1975 and served until 1993. Survivors include, Marilyn, his wife of 48 years; one daughter, Cheri Nickolisen and her husband, Brad, of Moorhead, Iowa and one son, Doug McDole of Soldier, Iowa Roger was preceded in death by his parents. Honorary pallbearers were Richard Swain, Lester Olsen, LeRoy Grote, Pete Hoffman, Ardell Savery, Charles Persinger and Russ Nixon. Pallbearers were Gordon Foss, Robert Bumsted, Leo Erlemeier, Mike Butler, Bob Hinrichsen and Doug Nelsen.
