Read More	ARGUS LEADER Sioux Falls, South Dakota Tuesday, 27 June 2000, Page 4B YANKTON – Roland E. “Pete” Peterson, 80, died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at Avera Sister James Nursing Home in Yankton. He was born June 27, 1918, in Postville, Iowa. He grew up and attended schools in the area, then latter attended business college in Des Moines, Iowa. He worked for the Iowa Broadcasting Company in Des Moines for one year, then moved to Yankton, where he worked for WNAX radio from 1939 until 1944, when he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served as a infantry sergeant in the European Theater during World War II, and was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, campaign medals and Combat Infantryman Badge. He married Jean Cotton on Aug. 19, 1940, in Yankton. He returned to WNAX radio in 1945, and worked with the station until 1970. He worked for the Missouri Valley Shopper from 1970 until 1973, then later for KYNT radio until his retirement in 1990. Over his long career in radio, he was recognized on many occasions, including for his work with the Farm Safety Council as “Accidental” Jones during Farm Safety Week and his efforts to educate on the topics of fire safety and flood damage prevention. He interviewed a number of celebrities including Eddy Arnold and Eleanor Roosevelt. He was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and served as a Boy Scout scoutmaster. He was a member of the Roy Anderson American Legion, where he served as commander, and was named Exalted Ruler of the Order of the Elks. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, a 32nd-degree Mason of St. John’s Masonic Lodge, No. 1, A.F. & A.M., and a Knight Commander of the Court of Honor. He was a member of the United Church of Christ (Congregational), where he served as deacon and a member of the board of benevolence. Survivors include two sons: Ronald Jr. of converse, Texas, and Jon of Ocean Springs, Miss.; two daughters: Diane Lane of Ignacio, Colo., and Laurie Wright of Arvada, Colo.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Duane of Chicago. Services begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Ray, Cantrell & Wintz Funeral Home in Yankton with entombment in the Gardens of Memories Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Ernest-Bowyer V.F.W. Post No. 791. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today at the Ray, Cantrell & Wintz Funeral Home in Yankton with the family present from 5 to 9 p.m. A Masonic service begins at 8 p.m., conducted by St. John’s Masonic Lodge No. 1, A.F. & A.M.
