WALLA WALLA, Wash., Dec. 31. - The funeral of little Roland Burke, which occurred from the home on East Main street this afternoon, has spread an air of gloom over the city. It was another case of a presumably unloaded gun killing a child. Roland Burke is dead and the little fellow who accidentally shot him is nearly crazy with the horror of his act. Both families are bowed down with grief. During the vacation of the city schools the boys, Roland Burke and Roy Brewer, have been playing together most of the time. They lived on the same block and had always been fast friends. Friday the lads went to the country with J. F. Brewer, Roy's father, to spend the day. Toward evening they discovered a 22-calibre rifle in the house and proceeded to play with it for a time. Finally Roland stood up and told his companion to shoot him as a soldier. The lad obeyed the command, took aim and fired. The deadly bullet struck Roland in the right eye, passing back to the brain, causing instantaneous death. Roland Burke was a son of Professor F. M. Burke of the city schools, a bright, happy lad. His little companion is a trifle younger, but the two have long been fast friends.
