A Large Attendance Our community was never more shocked than it was last Saturday noon when the news spread over our city that Roland Barker was dead, having died by a bullet from a revolver that had been accidentally discharged. He had been cleaning the same. He was employed in his father's grocery. The revolver had been kept at the store and had been used for killing rats in the basement. Soon after the accident a large crowd gathered, and as the news spread it was hard to realize, that Roland Barker's life had been cut off just as he was entering into the prime of young manhood, being just past twenty-five. Coroner Hill was called and after examination gave as his verdict, death by accident. Roland had just been married to Miss Cora Caslow of Yale on Monday before, and the sympathy of everyone goes out to the young bereaved wife, to the father and mother, sisters and brother, and other relatives. The high esteem in which he was held was signified by the profusion of beautiful flowers and by the large congregation which filled the church to over-flowing, to pay their last respects to one of the community's most promising young men. The funeral was held from the Methodist church on Monday, services being conducted by the pastor, the Rev. O. W. Morrow, and interment was in the Union Cemetery. The obituary follows: Roland Lee Barker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene E. Barker, was born at Menlo, Iowa, January 5, 1906, and died in Guthrie Center, Iowa, April 25, 1931. The first ten years of his life was spent in Menlo. He came to Guthrie Center with his family fifteen years ago. He attended Guthrie Center public schools and graduated from the high school in the spring of 1924. He was a student at Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa, during the college year 1927-1928. Since the summer of 1928, he has been in the mercantile business with his father in the Briardale Store, Guthrie Center. He was united in marriage to Cora Marie Caslow of Yale, Iowa, on April 20, 1931, by the Rev. William G. Warren, Adel, Iowa. As a boy he was received into the membership of the Methodist church in Menlo, and transferred with his family to the Methodist church of Guthrie Center, on February 19, 1914. He leaves to mourn their loss; his wife, his father and mother; two sisters, Mrs. Lenore Moore of Des Moines and Miss Lucile Barker of Des Moines; one brother, Benjamin, Guthrie Center; one grandmother, Mrs. M. A. Barker of New Meadows, Idaho; one grandfather, Perry Johnson, Guthrie Center, five aunts and four uncles and many friends.
