Lee Shafer, Sr., age 91, of Tekamah, died Friday, May 12, 1989 at the Logan Valley Manor Care Center in Lyons, Nebraska, where he had been a resident for the past one and one-half years. Lee was born on April 29, 1898 at Tekamah to Charles E. and Eva (Sisson) Shafer. He married Ethel Elizabeth Coons on June 24, 1920 at Cairo, Nebraska. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he returned to Tekamah where he worked as a Carpenter and also operated Shafer Electric Service. Lee Shafer, Sr., age 91, of Tekamah, died Friday, May 12, 1989 at the Logan Valley Manor Care Center in Lyons, Nebraska, where he had been a resident for the past one and one-half years. Lee was born on April 29, 1898 at Tekamah to Charles E. and Eva (Sisson) Shafer. He married Ethel Elizabeth Coons on June 24, 1920 at Cairo, Nebraska. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he returned to Tekamah where he worked as a Carpenter and also operated Shafer Electric Service. In later years he was also one of Tekamah's City Police Officers. He was a former member of the Tekamah American Legion Post, and was a life-long member of Orange Lodge No. 23, I.O.O.F. of Tekamah, having joined the Lodge on June 7, 1919. Lee was also a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church at Tekamah. Survivors include one son, Roland Shafer of Tekamah; three grandsons, Michael Shafer, Martin ("Pat") Shafer, and Matthew Shafer; one grand-daughter, Wendelin Carlson; eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Ethel, who died January 20, 1981. Funeral Services were May 15 at the First Presbyterian Church in Tekamah with Rev. Thomas E. Robson officiating. Interment was in the Tekamah Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Tekamah American Legion and V.F.W. Posts. ~~~Obituary courtesy of the Washington County Genealogical Society.
