The family will be present to greet friends for visitation from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Sunday at the funeral home. Roland Lester Furney, son of Lucy (Jonas) and Ronald E. Furney, was born on February 22, 1938 in Sioux Falls, SD. He grew up and attended school in Scotland, SD. Roland married Bernett A. Erickson at Zion Lutheran Church in Garretson, SD on March 4, 1960. The couple lived in Garretson before moving to Sioux Falls in 1963. Roland and Bernett were blessed with four children; Barbara, Lester, Dean and Charlene. Bernett passed away on June 19, 1986. Roland married Helen M. Fink on June 20, 1998 in Sioux Falls, SD at Bethel Lutheran Church. He was a hard-working man, holding-down three jobs at one time in his life. Roland worked for the State Highway Department as a heavy equipment operator. He was given the nickname "Duke" by his fellow co-workers. He retired in July of 1993 after 30 years of service. Roland also worked part-time for Howe's Oil Company for several years in the 70's and Vanderhule Moving and Storage until May of 2009. Roland always found time to help out his family, this was his passion in life. In 1997 Roland, along with family and friends completely rebuilt the family home. You could always find him working on and running the tractor at Dean's acreage, helping out with the horses, repairing fences, helping to re-build the horse barn and of course, in the field cutting and bailing hay. He had experience and knowledge, which he passed on to his children. If Roland could sneak away, he enjoyed fishing on the lake. Roland lost the only fight he couldn't win, cancer, on January 4, 2012. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Helen; son, Dean (Cindy Dede) Furney of Lennox, SD; daughter, Charlene Furney of Hartford; son-in-law, Robert Nemmers of Dell Rapids, step-sons, James (Deborah) Fink of Cincinnati, OH, Jerome (Jessie Hinostroza) Fink of Los Angeles, CA, Jeffery (Kim) Fink of Channahon, IL; 17 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gordon (Val) Furney of Hurley, SD and Marlin (Jeannie) Furney of Humboldt, SD; sister, Marlene (Ron) Carlson of Hurley, SD; many dear nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Roland was preceded in death by his first wife, Bernett; daughter, Barbara Nemmers; son, Lester Furney, step-daughter, Joylene Fink; grandson, Tony Furney; brother, Arnie Furney; his parents, Ronald and Lucy Furney
