Roman died Thursday, July 7, 2011 at his home. Roman Jacob Groszhans was born April 28, 1931 on the family homestead two miles south of Danzig in McIntosh County, ND. He was the son of Jacob Jr. and Emma (Iszler) Groszhans. Roman attended grade school in Danzig for eight years and graduated from Ashley High School in 1949. He farmed with his family. Roman was united in marriage on December 9, 1966 to Arlene Arlt in the Ashley Baptist Church. They made their home on the family homestead farm, taking over the operation, where they raised livestock and small grains. In 1991, they moved into Ashley, where he continued to farm from town until 1997 when he turned the farming operation over to the next generation, his son Kurt. He continued helping at the farm until 2010. Sitting idly by was not in his nature so he filled his time doing various carpentry works and restoring old John Deere tractors. He also was custodian of South Central Investors. His days would begin with his daily stop at the Dakota Family Restaurant for coffee and fellowship with the guys. He enjoyed bowling, playing cards, woodworking, carpentry, ice fishing, restoring and showing his John Deere tractors and his 1972 Ford pickup. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandson. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and attended Ashley Baptist Church. Roman was active in the Ashley Lions Club, and in the past had been active in the Zion Lutheran Church council, FHA Board, Ashley Medical Center Board, Ashley City Council and the Rural Fire Department. Survivors include his wife, Arlene, two daughters, Kristi Groszhans of Ashley and Kimberly Groszhans of Fargo, one son, Kurt Groszhans of Ashley, one grandson, Dylan Ehlers of Ashley, two step-sisters, Luceil (Clarence) Opp and Joanne Goebel, one sister-in-law, Betty Groszhans and one step-sister-in-law, Erna Klipfel. He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother Ruth Klipfel Groszhans, two brothers, Martin (Eunice) and Robert (infancy) and step-brother Roger Klipfel. The casketbeaers will be Dylan Ehlers, Paul Miller, John Westbee, Erich Schock, Paul Gall, Darvin Hauff, Tony Neu and Daniel Neu. The organist is Jean Schnabel, special music by Lana Christmann and the Ashley Baptist Church Men's Quintet. There will also be a reading by Justin Hauff.
