At the age of 82, he passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on February 19th, 2018 after battling kidney failure and heart disease. When he was very young his family moved to Burlington, Washington and he became a lifelong resident and farmer in Skagit Valley. Ron lived a wonderful life doing what he loved and surrounded by those he loved. His continuous calm and positive demeanor was unwavering. Ron grew up in Burlington on a dairy farm and graduated from Burlington-Edison High School with the class of 1954. He attended Pacific Lutheran University for one year, then transferred to Washington State University to complete his degree in Agricultural Science. Fortunately farming was his lifelong passion and came naturally. If he occasionally focused more on friends and less on classwork, he was still able to get by - typically with the help of his smile. Friends were always so important to him and played a huge role in his life. At the age of 35, after years of working hard as a farmer and living as a bachelor, Ron was intrigued with a young woman he met at Max Dales. They were married five months later and he never looked back because he had found the love of his life. Even the occasional nudge he received from friends, who found out he was marrying a spirited redhead nearly 13 years his junior, just made him laugh. Ron and his wife of 46 years, Crickett, lived on Samish Island all their years together. He loved the water and taking his family and friends crabbing, fishing and just boating around the Island. In 1976 Ron joined the Samish Island Volunteer Fire Department and served for 25 years. He also served his community as Dike District Commissioner for several years and as a member of Kiwanis. But primarily, Ron is remembered as an influential farmer in the Skagit Valley. He lived his life on “farm time” so if the fields needed to be plowed, planted, harvested or maintained; everything else would have to wait. That is, except for attending the occasional sporting events of his children and grandchildren, whom he loved watching and supporting. Until his final year, Ron could be found riding a tractor or driving around the County checking the fields and water pumps at every opportunity. He so dearly loved his family, friends and the Skagit Valley. Ron is survived and greatly missed by his wife, Crickett; three children: Stacey (Colonel) Betz, Troy (Michelle) Knutzen, and Wendy (Olugbenro) Ogunsemore; his sisters: Kerma Scribner and Linda (Chuck) Barbo; eight grandchildren: Cobe and Spencer Betz, Kendall, Cooper and Grayson Knutzen, and Makayla, Malakai and Isaiah Ogunsemore; his golden retriever, Sandy; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ron’s parents, and his sister, Norma (Jerry) Sells, preceded him in death. Please join us for a celebration of Ron’s life on Friday, March 2nd at 2:00pm at His Place Church in Burlington at 1480 S Burlington Blvd. Donations can be made to His Place Church Missions Fund or Pasado’s Safe Haven, a sanctuary for abused animals. Arrangements are under the care of Kern Funeral Home, Mount Vernon, WA.
