He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Fremont, the Arlington Volunteer Fire Department, was a former Jaycee member and played softball for Lou's Sporting Goods Team. He married Katherine J. Weaver April 15, 1972 at Fremont. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Frieda Gaines Martens. He is survived by his wife, Kathy; two sons, Brent and Christopher; two daughters, Jennifer and Jaime, all at home in Arlington; and a sister, Kathy (Mrs. Roger) Randall of Fremont. Pallbearers were Dan Wolfe, Randy Hokamp, Doug Samson, Duane Hilgenkamp, Rod Krause and Rich Meier.
