Wantoch, 65, of Overland Park, Kan., formerly of Stanton, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Norfolk with burial at a later date in the Stanton Cemetery. He died Tuesday, April 10, 2012. Ronald was born April 20, 1946, in Norfolk, son of Herbert Friedrich and Marie Minnie (Dietrich) Wantoch and grew up on a dairy farm in Stanton County. He earned a B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1969. He went to work at the Kansas City Division of the Bendix Corporation where he met and married Dixie Donnelly on Nov. 22, 1970. He also worked for the Environmental Protection Agency in the clean water division. In 1975, he started working as a professional engineer doing calculations for architects and builders involving solar energy and earth contact buildings/homes. He taught classes and published several articles on passive solar energy. Eventually he did contract programming. Ronald loved nature and went on many backpacking trips in Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho and Alaska. He was a lifelong environmentalist and a founder of the Missouri Solar Energy Associates (MSEA). He was an organizer of the 4th National Passive Solar Conference in 1979. He was a charter member of the Overland Park Arboretum. He was proud of the two champion trees in his yard: a Norway Spruce and an American Holly. He kept honeybees in an apple orchard southwest of Overland Park for a number of years as a hobby. Since boyhood, he was always passionate about butterflies and participated in Monarch Watch. His most recent interest was in native tall grasses. He was president of his local homeowners association. He also took an avid interest in researching his family history and put together several booklets for his family about his ancestors and their descendants. Ronald was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Sharon; his two brothers, Palmer "Sidney" and David. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Dixie of Overland Park; his daughter, Sarah of Greenbelt, Md.; two sisters, Carole Kopietz of Norfolk and Gloria Doffin of Hoskins; and 12 nieces and nephews.
