During his school years, Ron, and his twin brother Robert, took tap dancing lessons at Jo Ann's School of Dance in Marshalltown. He graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1959 and attended Marshalltown Junior College. He served in the United States Army. Ron joined the Marshalltown Police Department in June, 1968.
