Description	:	Ronald Vern Kinzer was born December 28, 1927, at the rural home of his parents in Southern Tripp County. He was the first-born child of Vern and Ernestine (Delfs) Kinzer, and he was joined by two brothers and three sisters to complete the Kinzer family. He attended high school in Colome where he stayed in the dorm... Read More	Ronald Vern Kinzer was born December 28, 1927, at the rural home of his parents in Southern Tripp County. He was the first-born child of Vern and Ernestine (Delfs) Kinzer, and he was joined by two brothers and three sisters to complete the Kinzer family. Ron grew up on the family homestead, and attended Riverview School for his elementary years. During his childhood years on the farm Ron developed his love for the land, his skills of hunting on the Turtle Buttes, and fishing in the Keya Paha River. He attended high school in Colome where he stayed in the dorm with the other country kids, played trumpet in the band, participated in sports, and worked on the school paper. He was also a member of the Turtle Butte Band. After he graduated from Colome High School in 1945 he enlisted in the Army, and in 1946 served in the Army of Occupation in Japan. He was discharged in 1947, and returned to Tripp County to join his father and grandfather Delfs in the farming operation around Turtle Butte. One Saturday night, at a dance in Wewela, he met a nice girl from Nebraska named Evelyn Simons, and they were married on January 9, 1954, in Gregory, SD. They made their home on the Kinzer homestead, where they raised their two children, Marlin and Cheryl. For 45 years they operated the farm, raising cattle, milking cows, and raising hogs. The homestead is still in the Kinzer family, and is one of the 100-Year Century Farms in Tripp County. They continued this operation until they moved to Gregory in 2000. During their years on the farm, Ron was active in the Winner VFW and Colome American Legion, where he served as a commander. He also served on the Wewela Community Hall Board, 42 years as a Rames Township Supervisor, as well as the local school board. He was a member of the Wewela Amateur Baseball team. He coached midget and teener baseball in Wewela. He also coached the Colome Legion baseball team and was very proud to take them to the state tournament. He liked to golf, and it was a highlight for him to participate in the Father's Day tournament in Springview. Ron was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan so he stayed close to the TV on Sunday afternoons. When Ron and Evelyn moved to Gregory in 2000, Ron became acquainted with his neighbors and would walk downtown every afternoon. His feet began giving him problems this winter, and he was admitted to the Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, where he passed away on February 13, 2012, at the age of 84 years. He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn, of 58 years, of Gregory, SD; their son, Marlin and wife Joni (Olson) Kinzer of Rapid City; and their daughter, Cheryl Foster of Rapid City, and by four grandchildren; Justin and Lindy Foster, Dana and Jon Elsasser, Cole and Renae Foster, Desi and Tyler Sampson; and by five great-grandchildren, Brock and Brody Foster, Owen Foster, and Preslie and Barrett Sampson. Also surviving are his five siblings, Jeannine Johnson (Walt) of Gregory, Leila (Ken) Adams of Gregory, Russell Kinzer of rural Colome, SD, Darol (Erna) Kinzer of Calle Marelos, CA, and Dianna Syfie of Ainsworth, NE; and by nieces, nephews and other relatives. Prayer services will be held Thursday, February 16, at Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home in Gregory. Funeral services will be Friday, February 17, at the Berean Fundamental Church in Gregory. Burial with military honors will be in the Colome Cemetery. The family prefers memorials. Mason Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
