He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Agnes; a brother, John Jr.; and a sister, Vera Houlahan. Ronald was born the son of John and Mary Casey McDonell on July 21, 1912, in Allan, Saskatchewan, Canada. Early in his life, he moved to Coggon, Iowa. On April 28, 1948, he married Agnes Trejtnar in Cedar Rapids. She died in February 1963. Ronald graduated from Loras College in Dubuque with a B.A. degree and served five years in the Air Force during World War II as a mechanic in the CBI Theatre. Ronald farmed at the family farm near Coggon for 19 years. He married Mary Holub in 1964 and they were later divorced. He also worked at Rockwell Collins for 12 years as a machinist, retiring in 1976. Ronald was a life member of the VFW and Elks Lodge. He enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs, dancing and playing cards with his friends. Eva Wilson was alongtime friend.
