Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, with the Rev. Thomas Zinkula officiating. He married Kathleen "Kay" Backes on Sept. 17, 1960, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Rickardsville, Iowa. Mr. Habel was employed at Lange Plastics, making hula hoops. In 1959, he was hired as a clerk in the cleaning room at John Deere Dubuque Works, and was promoted to supervisor by the age of 25. He was employed in the foundry at John Deere for 29 1/2 years, retiring on June 30, 1992. Ron worked as an ambassador for John Deere. He was a member of the John Deere Retirees and the Dubuque Boat Club. Surviving are his wife, Kay; a daughter, Nancy (Jim) Kelly, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; four sons, Kevin (Ellen) Habel, of Swisher, Iowa, Brian (Casey) Habel, of Rock Island, Ill., Mark (Denice Crapp) Habel, of Davenport, Iowa, and Jonathan (Jami Matthews) Habel, of Dubuque; seven grandchildren, Hailie Habel, Spencer Kelly and Sam, Ben, Claire, Logan and Caleb Habel; two stepgrandchildren, Chelsey and Zack Mayo; his mother, Dolores; a brother, Kenny (Julie) Habel, of Luxemburg, Iowa; a sister, Suzanne (Rick) Hoeger, of New Vienna, Iowa; and sisters and brothers in-law, Mary and Henry Gansemer, of Durango, Iowa, and Rose and Barry Brinkmeier, of Algoma, Wis. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold, in October 1992.
