The Shelby County, Iowa, native had farmed in Clarence, Iowa, and retired in 1977 from Richards Gebaur Air Force Base in Grandview as SMSGT after more than 20 years of service. He was a member of American Legion Post 286 in Clarence, Iowa, for more than 50 years and a World War 11 US Army Air Corps veteran. Surviving are a sister, Thelma Elijah of Clarence, Iowa; and nine nieces and nephews. His wife, Jean, preceded him in death. Military graveside services are 1:30 pm Tuesday at Clarence Cemetery, Clarence, Iowa. Memorials are to hospice of donor's choice. David Wise officiating. Mr. Harness died April 5 at Hospice Home in Ft Wayne, IN. He was born May 27, 1917 in Defiance. He moved to Clarence at age 3. He graduated from Clarence high school in 1934. He married Jean Brodersen on May 13, 1945 in Dodge City, KS. He took flying instruction with Cornell Airways in Lisbon in 1942, prior to entering the Army/Air Force. He was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Harness was a member of American Legion Post No. 386 in Clarence for over 50 years. Mr. Harness farmed in the Clarence area prior to entering the civil service and working in Wichita, KS. In 1957 he moved to Richards Gebaur Air Force Base in Grandview, MO and worked there until his retirement on May 27, 1977 as SMSGT. He served nearly 21 years in the military. He is survived by his sister, Thelma Harness Elijah, Clarence: a sister-in-law, Frances Brodersen, Olin: 9 nieces and nephews: and numerous great nieces and nephews, and their children. He was preceded in death by his parents: his wife: 2 brothers-in-law, Robert (Bob) Elijah and William Brodersen: and a sister-in-law and her husband, Ruth Brodersen Betz and Ralph Betz. Memorials may be made to a Hospice Unit of the donor's choice.
