Read More	Jo (Rosa June) Bates, 90, of Union, IA passed away, Sunday, August 4, 2013 at the Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center, in Marshalltown, IA. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 8, 2013, at the Union Community Church, in Union. Further arrangements are pending at the Conrad Chapel of the Anderson Funeral Homes, in Conrad, IA. Jo was born to C.H. and J.J. (Candor) Robinson on May 30, 1923, in Ames, IA. After living several other places, she graduated from Ames High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Iowa State College. On Jan 31, 1944, she married Lloyd L. Bates, who was in the 19th Tank Battalion, 9th Armored Division, U.S. Army. When World War II was over and he came back from Europe, he finished his veterinary medicine degree and they moved to Union, IA. Lloyd and Jo had three children; Judith, David, and Beth. Jo loved to take care of her children, watch them grow, and share in their activities. And then there were grandchildren – Jane and John and Scott and Rachel – who brought her so much happiness. Jo was instrumental in establishing the Union Public Library and was the librarian for many years. She loved her work and especially enjoyed knowing so many children. Jo loved reading and always had a book open. When she was able to do so, Jo especially enjoyed walking in the woods and canoeing down the Iowa River or on Pine Lake. Jo was active in the community. When her children were in school, she served on the school board. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Union Public Library Foundation and the Community Church Foundation. She was a member of the Union Community Church and regularly attended its Sunday service. She never stopped learning. When she could no longer work at the library, she started making web pages for the library, the town of Union, and the Union Community Church. Jo will be missed by her husband, Lloyd, two daughters; Judith (Craig) Fulton of Ames, IA, Beth (Stephen) Gaul of Slater, IA, four grandchildren; Jane and John Fulton and Scott and Rachel Gaul, and her many friends.
