Read More	Born as Rosa Wells on April 7, 1889 to James Wells (1861, 1909) and Celene Ouellette (1865, 1891) in Lewiston, Montana Territory. ------------- Historical Perspective I ----------------- The Montana Territory was granted statehood on November 8, 1889. Lewiston, Fergus, Montana, USA History: The area that is now Lewistown was once the territory of Blackfoot Native Americans. In 1874, Fort Lewis was established there by Company "F" of the U.S. 7th Infantry, to provide military protection for people traveling on the Carroll Trail, the then shortest route between Carroll, Montana and Helena. Lewistown is named after this fort. The first permanent settlers of Lewistown were Métis, (French traders, Native American mixed blood). The Metis established Lewiston in 1879. Pierre Berger is credited with being the founder of Lewistown. Berger, along with his wife Judith Wilkie Berger, son Isadore Berger, Isaie Berger, Jean Baptiste Berger, Jacques Berger, as well as several other families, made the trek into the Lewistown area in 1879. Francis Janeaux came with a second group. 1883 is considered the official "founding" of Lewistown. Lewistown was also the site of a gold rush when gold was discovered in the nearby Judith Mountains in 1880. When the gold supply ran out, many of the miners gained new employment in Lewiston and settled there permanently. ---------------------------------------------------------- Family oral tradition maintains that Rosa was 'full blood' Native American. This is at least partially collaborated by the 1900 census, (e.g. race: Indian). Regardless, Rosa's birthplace, Lewiston, Montana, was nearby several reservations. -------------- Historical Perspective II --------------- June 25, 1875: Battle of the Little BigHorn (river) in Little BigHorn County, Montana, USA. September 4, 1886: Apache (Bebonkohe) Chief Geronimo surrenders at Skeleton Creek, Cochise County, Arizona, USA. circa 1890: Ghost Dance Movement resurfaces among Plains Indian tribes for the second time. December 15, 1890: Souix (Hunkpapa Lakota) Medicine Man Sitting Bull killed by Indian Agency police at Grand River, Perkins County, South Dakota, Standing Rock Indian Reservation. December 29, 1890: Massacre at Wounded Knee Creek, South Dakota, Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. -------------------------------------------------------- Rosa's birthmother, Celene {Ouellette} Wells, travelled away from her family, (at least temporarily), circa 1890, perhaps to join the second 'Ghost Dance Movement'. 'Oral tradition' holds that Rosa's birthmother fell at 'the Knee'. Father James Wells remarried on April 7, 1896 to (Step mother) Margaret Berger (1874, 1955), in Fergus County, Montana. At age 9, Rosa's step-sister, Clara Ruth Wells, was born in Fergus County in 1898. At age 11, Rosa appears in the 1900 US census residing at Lewiston with her father's family. In 1903, Rosa's step-brother, Anthoney J Wells, is born. On June 9, 1908, Rosa (age 19) marries Walter S Chase (abt age 24), in Pocahontas County, Iowa. Sometime after her marriage, genealogical records indicate Rosa used the name 'Rose' Chase, (Rose being the Anglo version of her given name). Rosa appears in the 1910 census as the spouse of Walter S Chase, residing at Powhatan, Pocahontas County, Iowa, USA and showing the birth of her first child, Mildred Lueseal Chase (b. 1909). The Iowa state census of 1915 lists Rosa as residing in Buena Vista County, Iowa, USA. After daughter Mildred, Rosa next gave birth to daughter Laverne I Chase (b. 1912), daughter Evalyn M Chase (b. 1914) and son Manford W Chase (b. 1916). In November, 1918, at age 29, Rosa gives birth to her youngest child, daughter Gretchen Josephine Chase (1918, 1997), in Buena Vista county, Iowa, USA. Circa 1920, around the age of 31, Rosa is diagnosed with Tuberculosis. The 1920 census lists Rosa as living at Fairfield, Buena Vista Co, Iowa. Family oral tradition has husband Walter Chase moving his family to Washington to better deal with his wife's TB, on the advice of his uncle, Joseph Lapham Chase (Burlington, WA). Rosa arrived in Washington state around 1921. The next winter, on January 24, 1922, in Burlington, Skagit County, Washington, USA, Rosa {Wells} Chase passes away at the age of 32 years and 9 months, (according to Washington Death records). Rosa {Wells} Chase is buried at Green Hills Memorial Cemetery in Burlington, Washington, under the name Rose Chase.
