He funeral service will be live-streamed on Thursday morning. Rose Anne Joyce Colella was born in Tulare, SD on May 12, 1927 to Raymond “Gene” Joyce and SaBina Knox. The family moved to North Dakota where Rose Anne graduated from Sykeston High School. They moved again, and settled in Mitchell, SD where Rose Anne earned her teaching certificate at Notre Dame Junior College in 1949. A gifted teacher, Rose Anne touched the hearts and mind of students for 51 years. She taught in Montrose and Salem, SD, then moved to San Diego CA where she taught for 31 years, mostly fourth grade. In 1974, at a Valentine’s Day party in San Diego, Rose Anne stepped into a doorway at the same time that a handsome Italian man was entering from the other direction. His nametag said Edward Colella, and he took notice of her nametag. “Rose Ann Joyce, what kind of a name is that,” Ed asked, and Rose Anne proudly told him she was Irish. Four months later, she married Ed and his three teenage children. Rose Anne remained Ed’s “beautiful bride” for 46 years. Ed and Rose Anne bought a farm and moved back to Mitchell in 1982. Although she had retired from teaching, the Mitchell Catholic Schools needed a teacher, and she agreed to “one more year.” That year stretched into 14 and she was chosen as the SD Catholic School Teacher of the Year in 1990. After her second retirement, Rose Anne and Ed moved to Sioux Falls and became active members of the Center for Active Generations, where Rose Anne enjoyed wood carving, water coloring, and creative writing. In 2018, she published her memoir, A Rose to Remember. Rose Anne is survived by her husband Edward Colella, stepchildren Debbie Hulley, Donna George, and Eddie Colella (Vel), and three generations of loving nieces and nephews. Rose Anne is preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings Sr. Eleanor Joyce, Rev. James Joyce, Thomas (Elaine) Joyce, Sr. Sabina Joyce, Dr. John (Margaret) Joyce, Bernardine (William) Knapp, Raymond Joyce, and Ronald Joyce. - George Boom Funeral Home
