Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. MDT today at Dahl Funeral Home, Billings. Rose Florence Bender was born Jan. 22, 1917, to Phillip and Agnes (Dietz) Dinius at Glen Ullin, N.D. She attended Mott public school system, where she lettered in women's basketball during the 1930's. Raised during the depression, she was required to work for various area families at age 12, and at age 16 became a full-time nanny and housekeeper. She was united in marriage to Elmer J. Bender at Baker, Mont., on June 15, 1939. For 22 years, she and her husband owned and operated a business in Elgin, where she was an active member of various organizations. On May 29, 1968, her husband of 30 years passed away, and in July 1970, she moved to Billings. While residing in Billings, she cared for her mother and brother, during which time she also worked for the Billings senior citizens center. Rose never missed a day of work for 20 years. She officially retired on June 27, 1990, and occupied her time with hobby projects, collecting petrified rocks, reading, working in her yard, flowers, embroidery work, and enjoyed visiting with all the wonderful neighbors she had during the years. Rose is survived by her only son, Elmer Paul Bender, Missoula; one granddaughter, Suzanne Hughes, Pocatello, Idaho; one grandson, Steven Bender, attending Montana State University, Bozeman, Mont.; and numerous relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer J.; one daughter, Janice Ann, in infancy; two sisters, Berth and Katherine; and two brothers, Jack and William. The family requests that all memorials be sent to the Little Flower Church, or your local hospice program for cancer patients.
