A silver head nods lower and lower. So much behind her, so many memories, so many roads traveled. It started as a path on the little farm near Laurens, Iowa. Her mother, pretty young Beatrice Boys who married the tall handsome Raymond Farlow, her father. They had three girls, Marguerite, Ruth and Lavohn. And then on March 5th of 1926, Rose Marie was born. The path grew to a country road when she went to school in Laurens and then to a street when they moved to town. High school social life began with a Halloween party at the Schlensig farm. "Better fix up pretty," her sisters teased, "Dorothy has a good looking brother."And she did! They were high school sweethearts, and because Elmer took aeronautics in anticipation of military service in World War II, Rose Marie joined the class too and eventually they both became pilots! Elmer went on to college at Buena Vista and Rose Marie graduated from Laurens. He then joined the Army Air Corp. They soon had a short-lived secret. They had eloped to St. Louis! But, a friend of Beatrice's, read it in the St. Louis paper and the secret was no more. At war's end, they returned to Laurens, having traveled highways the length and breadth of the country with memories of many friends and experiences. They also had another secret, but when they announced it at the family gathering, they found out that sisters Ruth and Lavohn had the same secret, they were all expecting! It would be a wonderful year. Elmer began farming with his father and started the Laurens Airport. He was giving a flying lesson on Sunday afternoon, March 24, 1946, five days after his 24th birthday, when the unthinkable happened. The airplane crashed and he was killed. Their daughter, Linda Marie, was born in October in Denver, Colorado, where Rose Marie had moved to live with her parents after her world fell apart. Rose Marie and Linda visited Laurens frequently to see relatives and friends when Rose Marie's job as a telephone operator allowed it. There, she met August Roewe, and they were married April 17th, 1949. They moved to the farm east of Laurens in the spring of 1950. Their first son, Frederick Carlos Roewe, was born on April 7th that year. On June 10th, 1955 son Raymond Farlow Roewe was born. They were a busy farm family and her road most traveled was the one to town and back. Rosie loved to cook for the crews that came to work at planting and harvest, many times carrying lunch to the field to save time for the workers. She enjoyed community activities like Farmer's Club, Bridge Club , Birthday Club and Bible Study groups. As the children grew she became Scout leader, Bible School teacher and music coach. She was never happier than when someone was practicing something! In 1965, Linda graduated, started college and on her birthday, October 10th, Robin Hughes Roewe was born. Soon Fred went on to college and the Navy and Ray went to college to become an oral surgeon. Gus passed away October 4th, 1980. After her mother Beatrice died in 1982, dad Ray Farlow continued to live in Colorado for a while, but then came to live with Robin and Rose Marie on the farm. They also welcomed several foster children into their family, including Brian Cummings. And then the nest was empty. The children had all grown and Ray and Beatrice were together again. Rose Marie still loved the farm and her cozy home. She lived there for several years, but then her health began to fail. An apartment in town suited her needs and enabled her to see friends and get to church more easily. Three years ago she was ready to move to Rock Port, Missouri with daughter Linda and son-in-law Clarence to give her more support and company. She enjoyed the little church in Riverton and liked to help Linda in the kitchen. Last summer she supervised great grands Charleigh and Wyatt putting up apples and applesauce, much to the delight of them all! This spring saw a turn in her health and she was becoming more uncomfortable. After a fall at home, she was recuperating at Tarkio Rehab Center. Early Thursday, June 14th, while talking with some of the staff, she simply went to sleep. With all the "busyness" in her life and dedication to her family, serving God never failed to be her main purpose. The Bible verse that meant the most to her: "All things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose." Her faith in that promise got her through many rough times. So, the rocking chair slows to a stop. The silver head rests. Her road here is done. She joins her parents, Raymond and Beatrice Farlow; sisters Betty Rae, who died at 2 years, Marguerite Wisecup, Ruth Spear and Lavohn Kallsen; husbands Elmer Schlensig and August Roewe and Niece Virginia Johnson. She is survived by children Linda and husband Clarence Schaffner of Rock Port, Missouri; Fred and wife Mona of Middleburg, Florida; Raymond and wife Rhonda of Burlington, Iowa; and Robin and wife Suzanne of San Antonio, Texas, nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, thirteen nieces and nephews and innumerable friends.
