Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 29, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Peosta, Iowa, with the Rev. Richard Kuhn officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Centralia, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m. and a Farley American Legion Auxiliary service at 6:30 p.m. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Saturday at the church. She was born on Dec. 15, 1920, in Dubuque, daughter of Henry and Genevieve (Kennedy) O'Connell. She was a 1938 graduate of St. Clement's High School, Bankston, Iowa. She also was a graduate of Clarke College, Dubuque. She married Bernard J. Burds on Oct. 1, 1949, at St. Clement's Catholic Church in Bankston; he preceded her in death on March 31, 1997. Rosemary was a school teacher in Dubuque County for many years, and later worked at the post offices in Peosta and Dubuque for 20 years. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Parish in Peosta. Rosemary also was a member of its Altar and Rosary Society, and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court 1287 of Dubuque. Surviving are a daughter, Beth (Richard) Hoefer, of Farley, Iowa; four grandchildren, Matthew (Shirley) Hoefer, Megan (Brian) Lilly, Rachel (Matt) Puccio and Gretchen (fiance, Ryan Ramler) Hoefer; six great-grandchildren, Emma, Lincoln and William Hoefer, Chloe, Claire and Callie Puccio; a brother, Henry (Lois) O'Connell, of Bankston; a sister-in-law, Bernadine Spiegel, of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Ann Michele Burds, on Sept. 27, 2007; three children in infancy, Donald, Patricia and Bernard; and a sister, Mildred O'Connell.
