Among its passengers was a Welch family named Price, and a young missionary, Rosser Jenkins. Rosser Jenkins had been born in Glamorgon-Shire, Wales, in 1834. The following year, Anne Price was born in the same town. These young people grew up and became acquainted, but doubtless had not the slightest idea how the threads of their lives would be woven together in the future. At some time in their late youth, missionaries of the Utah Church had visited Glamorgon-Shire. The Price family and Rosser heard the message, and quite innocent of the terrible apostasy even then taking place, believed the missionaries, were baptized, and sometime later set out for America. It was perhaps an excellent thing that these pilgrims could not see far into the future. They were happy beyond words for they fully believed that they were coming to the Land of Zion. They knew nothing of the Brighamite apostasy. To them the future was rich with promise. They were journeying to the City of God. We do not know that Rosser or Anne [Price] Jenkins ever glimpsed or set foot upon the soil which we of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints call home - Independence, Missouri. That dream was cruelly shattered. But we do know that they carried that dream with them throughout the years, that wherever they dwelt there they built Zion, and that to the fourth generation their descendents have been raised in righteousness. In the United States they learned of the death of Joseph Smith, the prophet. Arrived at “Mormon Grove” still innocent of the true state of affairs, they bought covered wagons by putting money into a “Mormon Fund” and joined a company setting out for Utah. It was a severe journey. Anne Price helped other girls drive oxen and cows, helped her mother build fires and cook meals for her father, two sisters and two brothers. In November 1855 they arrived at Salt Lake. The trials of the journey faded into the background before the new hardships of Salt Lake City. Their tents, wagons and money were promptly taken from them by the Mormons whose Bishop told them it was a sin to have money. The Prices were given an old schoolhouse, with a very inadequate roof, in which to live. They cut willow saplings to keep out the storms and passed a miserably unhappy winter here. Soon they moved to Ogden where Rosser and Anne were married. For some time the young couple lived in a dugout, and her two sons and a daughter were born to them. They were gravely unhappy in Utah. Polygamy, a thing which the missionaries in Wales had never mentioned, was being practiced all around them. They were shocked and disillusioned and kept strictly aloof from it. Their friends were few and they had gained the enmity of the church officials. One night a friend came to them, secretly, and warned them that “the destroying angels” were after them. They quickly roused their children, wrapped them in their scanty garments, bound up their few belongings and with a friend’s help, escaped. One wonders how they managed to leave the town unnoticed. Possibly a young couple carrying three sleepy children looked too settled and domestic to be recognized as fugitives from a spiritual Egypt. Possibly the Heavenly Father caused a “deep sleep to fall upon the inhabitants of the city.” We do not know. But in the morning they were out on the desert facing toward the northeast. They were poorly clad for their journey and had been able to take but little food. Anne’s thin shoes soon gave out and she trudged barefoot over sharp stones and hot dessert sands. What little food they had they rationed, carefully saving most of it for the children. Anne and Rosser chewed on their rawhide shoes for subsistence. There was always the danger of Indian attack. On these poor fugitives journeyed, faint and suffering, but having a strong faith that God would not forsake them in their hour of need. And He did not forsake them. They traveled in a north-easterly direction and like other faithful ones in the past, “After many days’ journey into the wilderness they came to a river” and green pastures near the present town of Missoula, Montana, then known as Sterling. Here, worn and emaciated, they rested and ate, probably feeding on pheasant and fish. They erected a log cabin here and settled; and here in the busy but peaceful years that followed, seven more children (of whom six survived) were born. In 1860 the original Church was reorganized with the son of Prophet Joseph Smith as its president. A short time later, Brother Zenas Gurley came to Sterling. After careful study (for they wished to have no connection with the Utah Church), Rosser and Anne Jenkins were baptized into the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In time, nine children became and have remained, faithful members. 1989 1989 BOOK:"Powell County: Where It All Began" By: Powell County Museum and Arts Foundation THE JENKINS FAMILY Rosser James Jenkins, son of Rosser G. and Mary F. Jenkins, was born in Aberdare, Glamorganshire, South Wales on September 25,1834. He came to the U.S. when he was twenty-three years old. On November 24, 1852, [1856] Rosser married Ann Price, the daughter of Jeremiah and Jane Morgan Price. Ann was born in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales on August 1, 1835. Rosser Jenkins, not liking the government of Utah, came to Montana, being among the first miners in Bannack in 1862-63 and in Virginia City, Montana. The Jenkins went down to Malad City, Idaho and later came up to Lolo Forks (or Fort Missoula now) in the spring of 1870 with the Isaac Price and Bennett families. Rosser acquired a ranch in the Bitterroot near the famous Bass Brothers' place. After this, Rosser moved to Blackfoot City, staying there for several years before he moved east of Avon. He operated the stage station where the horses were changed for the stage line between Avon and Helena. The stage station was located on the Triplecox Place across the railroad from the present home of John P Senecal. Briggeman, Butler, and Jenkins were all in the dairy business together on the old Vye Ranch, known as the Milk Ranch (now Kathryn Senecal's ranch). The Rosser J. Jenkins' bought their place (where Johnny J. Senecal lives) from the railroad in April of 1886 and moved into their new house in 1892. Rosser bought a house in Deer Lodge when his heath started to fail several years before his death on June 2,1903. Ann Price sold the ranch to the Snowshoe Livestock Company in 1917. Ann died February 15,1924. Both Rosser and Ann are buried in Deer Lodge. Ann Jenkin's mother, Jane Price, when past eighty, often walked up to the Issac Price's and spent a day or two mending for them. Rosser and Ann had ten children.
