Marcou, a recent Portland centenarian, died Dec. 21, 2008, at the Seaside Nursing Center He was born in Winslow, on Oct. 4, 1908, the youngest of eight children born to Philibert and Marie Poulin Marcou. Mr. Marcou was the devoted husband of Bernardine L'Abbé Marcou of Waterville, for 62 years, until her death in 2006. Both Rossiter and his wife were graduates of Colby College in Waterville. Before serving in the Navy during World War II, Rossiter was a member of the Paulist Choristers in New York City. He lent his rich baritone voice to 'The Catholic Hour' weekly radio program and also performed in the 1939 World's Fair 'Railroads on Parade' exhibit. In 1960 Rossiter and his family moved to Portland. A passionate lover of liturgical music, he later served as choir director at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. His solo renditions during liturgies are especially memorable, particularly the Christmas hymn, 'O Holy Night.' In 1972, Rossiter relished his role as soloist at his son Ross' wedding. A high school physics teacher, he spent many years on the faculty of Bonny Eagle High School. During the years following his retirement, Mr. Marcou often encountered former students who expressed gratitude for his nurturing guidance. In his spare time, Rossiter enjoyed cooking, gardening and oil painting. Having shared wonderful outings at Pemaquid Point with his family, Mr. Marcou was deeply interested in the colonial history of the area. An energetic person, he continued baking his own bread even in his 100th year. Rossiter was especially proud of his only son, Ross, now deceased, who graduated from Cheverus High School and later received his Ph.D. from Princeton University. Mr. Marcou is survived by his grandson, Nicholas, who with his wife, Alessia, have a newborn daughter, Julia Natalie. Also surviving Rossiter is his daughter-in-law, Kathleen Marcou. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family at St. Francis Cemetery, Waterville. (Portland Press Herald 12/26/2008)
