One of the saddest occurrences it has recently been our duty to record is the tragic death of Roy Cooper, the fourteen year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Cooper of thig city, who was killed by lightning last Saturday afternoon. Scarcely had the particulars of the affair reached town when a gloom seemed to be cast over the entire community and the sympathy of everyone was extended to the grief-stricken relatives. The young man had accompanied his father to the George Trubey farm north of town where they expected to get a small dray load of hay and as a threatening rain cloud had come up, they were hastening with the work of loading, the boy standing on the wagon and Mr. Cooper on the ground, probably six feet distant. Without a second's warning there came a blinding flash of lightning, instantly killing the young man and knocking Mr. Cooper to his knees, the latter, however, regained his feet just in time to see the boy fall from the wagon. The unfortunate lad was at once taken to the Trubey home and within a very few minutes Dr. Spessard arrived, but all indications pointed to an instantaneous death. The bolt struck the young man on the left side of the head, tearing a large hole in the felt hat which he wore; following the neck to the chest it crossed to the right side, thence on down, leaving the body from the right foot. His shoe was torn on and the entire body showed evidence of being badly burned. Roy Erwin Cooper was born .in Jewell County, February 24th, 1898 and departed this life July 20th, 1912 at the age of fourteen years, 4 months and 26 days. His manly, polite ways caused him to be a favorite with both old and young and he was just at an age when he was a great deal of comfort to the father and mother. He was a member of the Methodist Sunday school and regular in attendance. The sudden death has cast a shadow over the home which can never be entirely lifted. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Monday afternoon at one o'clock, conducted by Rev. Westerman and Elder Cornish and interment made in the Athens cemetery in Jewell County.
