Description	:	Roy H. Bengtson HOT SPRINGS - Roy H. Bengtson of Hot Springs died in Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland, Wash., on Dec. 15, 2000, one week before his 95th birthday. He was born on the family homestead in Karlstad, Minn., on Dec. 22, 1905, the third child of Hannah and Charles Bengtson. Read More	Roy H. Bengtson HOT SPRINGS - Roy H. Bengtson of Hot Springs died in Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland, Wash., on Dec. 15, 2000, one week before his 95th birthday. He was born on the family homestead in Karlstad, Minn., on Dec. 22, 1905, the third child of Hannah and Charles Bengtson. In 1918, Roy moved with his mother and siblings to Whitefish, arriving by train on Oct. 28. There they joined his father and older brother Quentin who had gone ahead to work in a blacksmith shop and to homestead near where the Big Mountain ski area is now located. After attending school in Whitefish, Roy received most of his education in "the school of hard knocks." As a young man, he worked in Cook's grocery store and in local dairies. In 1929, the family purchased the Miller dairy property and he made his home there until selling the ranch in 1950. During World War II he helped the war effort by raising grain and livestock. In 1949, he married Anna Bakken, who survives him in Hamilton. For many of the years from 1928 until retiring in 1979 he worked on the roads in Glacier National Park, helping with the construction and maintenance of Going-to-the-Sun Road. Upon retirement, he was honored for being the longest-employed member of the Glacier Park crew. After retirement, he and Anna enjoyed trips to her home country of Norway. They also traveled to Mexico, Canada, Iceland, Hawaii and spent several winters in Arizona. The couple lived in and near Kalispell until moving to Hot Springs in 1992. He spent his last months with family in Redmond, Wash. Roy was preceded in death by an infant brother, Walter, who died from the Spanish flu in Whitefish on Armistice Day 1918. Also preceding him in death were brothers Quentin and Archie, sisters Ethel Taylor, Rose Christensen and Dahlia McMillan, and stepson Einor Norbeck. He is survived by sisters Violet Howard of Fresno, Calif., Lily Holden of San Rafael, Calif., and Eileen Bondurant of Everett, Wash. He is also survived by stepson Ted Bakken of Nak Nek, Alaska, six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to join the family at a memorial service in Whitefish on Sunday, May 27. For the specific time and place, call niece Helen Bengtson Nash in Redmond, Wash., at (425) 882-0405.
