"Slim" Koger, 68 of 210 North High Street, Gilman, died Thursday morning July 15, at Veterans Hospital in Des Moines. Roy was the son of John H. and Bessie Lewis Koger. He was born April 5, 1908 in Kingston, Missouri. In 1910 he moved with his family to the Newburg area, and attended schools there. He graduated from Newburg High School in 1927, and later attended Grinnell College. In August of 1937, he married Elma Van De Ventor at Gilman. He entered the United States Navy on December 8, 1942, and served as a cook during the second World War. Following his discharge, he returned to Gilman, and was employed at Walker's Super Valu until his retirement in 1970. Mr. Koger, a member of the Gilman Community United Church of Christ, and a trustee of that church, married Bernice Campbell in Omaha on August 20, 1967. He was a member of and past commander of the Gilman American Legion Paul Ward Post No. 149, a member of the Forty and Eight at Marshalltown, and of the Gilman Lions Club. Surviving are his wife, Bernice: three step children, Donald Campbell of Marshalltown, Dr. Robert Campbell of Colorado City, Colorado, and Marlene (Gary) Anderson of Tama; nine step grandchildren; two brothers, Russell of Grinnell, and Donald of Raynesford, Montana; two sisters, Opal (Lloyd) Paul of LeRoy, Minnesota, and Eva (David) Gobat of Oak Park, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elma, on March 11, 1965, and two brothers, Dean and John. Added 25 Dec 2021
