Description	:	BATH -- Roy Ibra Lawrence, 97, of Sunnybrook Village in Brunswick and formerly of Bath, died on Monday, July 20, 2009 at Sunnybrook Village, surrounded by his two daughters and their husbands. Mr. Lawrence was born on March 25, 1912 in Arrowsic, Maine, the eldest son of Ibra Kirvin Lawrence and Grace Sotheard Lawrence. Read More	BATH -- Roy Ibra Lawrence, 97, of Sunnybrook Village in Brunswick and formerly of Bath, died on Monday, July 20, 2009 at Sunnybrook Village, surrounded by his two daughters and their husbands. Mr. Lawrence was born on March 25, 1912 in Arrowsic, Maine, the eldest son of Ibra Kirvin Lawrence and Grace Sotheard Lawrence. He lived in Arrowsic and Georgetown with his four sisters and two brothers, now all deceased. He attended both the old Morse High School, which burned, and the current Morse High School. He graduated with honors in 1929, then returned for 2 years of college preparatory classes when he learned that a Davenport Fund scholarship would enable him to attend the University of Maine at Orono. During his high school years while living in Arrowsic, he walked ten miles round-trip daily to and from school, at first taking the ferry across the Kennebec River, later walking across the Carleton Bridge. He graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in electrical engineering. He started working at the Bath Iron Works in 1936, eventually becoming the welding engineer at the Yard, and retired in 1974. His exacting standards for welding led to the nickname “Pinhole Lawrence”. He traveled extensively on business throughout the United States, Germany, and Scandinavia during his years at BIW. During summer break from college, he helped to build the bridge between Georgetown and Arrowsic. Mr. Lawrence married the former Margaret Avery of Bangor in 1936 and they settled in Bath and raised their twin daughters Barbara and Deborah. Mr. Lawrence was active in both his community and his neighborhood. Devoted to the Masons, he was a Life Member of Solar Lodge #17 F and AM, and had been a member since 1940. Three times he served as Master and twice he was Mason of the Year. After retirement in 1974 Mr. Lawrence worked for several years as a welding project consultant with Washburn and Doughty Shipyard. He served as a Trustee of The Plant Memorial Home in Bath from 1989 to 1999 and served as president from 1989 through 1995, leading the Home through a particularly challenging period. During retirement he also delivered Meals on Wheels and assisted neighbors with transportation needs and snow clearance. Mr. Lawrence was an accomplished photographer. He spent many happy hours in his darkroom at home. His creative and beautiful black and white prints were awarded many prizes in shows around the state. Over the years he developed a significant color photo record of Bath buildings. These photos were donated to the Bath Historical Society and are now available on DVD there and at the Patten Free Library in Bath. An avid vegetable gardener, he provided produce to neighbors, who especially awaited his raspberries and rhubarb. Other interests included cross country and international travel with his wife. He was happiest when with family. After his wife’s death, he became an accomplished cook, often preparing large meals and fancy desserts for his extended family. While a resident at Sunnybrook Village he was known for baking chocolate chip cookies, which were enjoyed by both his fellow residents and the staff. He was predeceased by his wife of fifty years, Margaret A. Lawrence in 1988; his four sisters: Mary Pray, Irene Wright, Ruth Lawrence, and Dorothy Cable; two brothers, Elmer Lawrence and Robert Lawrence. He is survived by two daughters: Barbara Yuodsnukis and her husband Anthony of Brunswick; Deborah Malone and her husband David of Boston ; four grandchildren: Joel Yuodsnukis and his wife Lisa of Bozeman, Montana; Alan Yuodsnukis and his wife Lynn, of Brunswick; Michael Malone of West Hartford, Conn.; Kathleen Malone and her husband Jacobus van Reijendam of Boston; six great grandchildren: Alesa and Emily Yuodsnukis of Brunswick, Katherine and Jennifer Yuodsnukis of Bozeman, and Luke and Elisabeth van Reijendam of Boston: many nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews. Residents of Sunnybrook Village are invited to a memorial tea on Saturday, July 25th, between 4:00 and 5:00 pm. Friends are invited to visit with family at Sunnybrook Village, 340 Bath Road, Brunswick, on Saturday, July 25th between 5:30 and 7:30 pm.
