Lavengood was born Feb. 17, 1930, in Harrison Township, Miami County, to Roy J and Ethel (Riley) Lavengood. He was married to Martha ‘Jean’ (Pyke) Lavengood on June 28, 1953, in Converse, and she survives. Lavengood was born Feb. 17, 1930, in Harrison Township, Miami County, to Roy J and Ethel (Riley) Lavengood. He was married to Martha ‘Jean’ (Pyke) Lavengood on June 28, 1953, in Converse, and she survives. Mr. Lavengood was a teacher in Southwood - Noble Township schools for eight years and Oak Hill High School for nine years before going on to teach at Gary Community Schools for 10 years. Roy and Jean were also missionaries. He graduated from Clay Township school in Miami County in 1947. Before enlisting in the Army, he attended Butler University for 2 years. He enlisted in the United States Army in April 1951 and served until March 1953. He received the good conduct medal, sharp shooter medal and the European Theater ribbon, reaching the rank of Corporal. He then went on to attend Purdue University, graduating with a B.S. in Education/Guidance in 1957. He then received his Masters of Science Education and Guidance and Horticulture in 1969. Mr. Lavengood had been a member of Gideon’s International, Retired Teachers Association, Greentown Wesleyan Church, Swayzee Lion’s Club, founder of the Men for Missions and organized the Swayzee council. He enjoyed photography, landscaping and traveling. He enjoyed photographing round barns, covered bridges and lighthouses. He also enjoyed time spent with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, M. Jean; sons, Dr. Daniel (Cindy) Lavengood, Dr. Todd (Kristin) Lavengood, Brian (Katrina) Lavengood, and Dennis Lavengood; daughter, Lori (Roy) Reinertsen; grandchildren, SSG, Jason (Jessica) Lavengood, Danielle (Sean) Hughes, Dr. Samantha (Ben) Boucher, Matt (Sarah) Lavengood, Madison Lavengood, Amanda (Ryan) Weaver, Kara (Chris) Pogue, Michelle (Kevin) DeRosette, Amber Meyer, Dennis Lavengod, Levi Lavengood, Meghan Reinertsen and Nicholas Reinertsen; 20 great-grandchildren; brother, Paul (Gail) Lavengood; and sisters, Marilyn Klise, and Phyllis (Darlton) Lavengood. He was preceded in death by his father; mother; older brother, Darlton J. Lavengood; and stepmother, Polly Lavengood. A service will take place at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, at Greentown Wesleyan Church, 120 N Maple St., Greentown, with Pastor Paul Boss officiating. Burial will take place at Kokomo Zion following the service, with military rites being performed by the American Legion Post 317. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, also at Greentown Wesleyan Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Gideon’s International and Greentown Wesleyan Church.
