Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 4, 2015 at Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown with Pastor Bob Waite officiating. Music will be furnished by Julie Abraham accompanied by Marcia Jelsma. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., with a time of sharing at 6:15 p.m. and a rosary to follow on Tuesday at the Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown. Military Honors will be conducted by Codington County Post 17 of the American Legion and SD Army National Guard Funeral Honors Team. Pallbearers will be Roy's grandsons, David, Michael, John, Todd and Shane Bergan, and Anthony Holzemer. Roy Ulrich Amacher was born on January 3, 1920 to Edward and Nettie (Keller) Amacher on a farm near Foley, South Dakota. He attended school in Foley and Thomas, and high school in Watertown, graduating in 1938. While attending Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, MO, Roy entered the United States Army on June 3, 1942 and served in Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe during World War II. While in the service Roy was secretary in the Office of the Judge Advocate General. After his honorable discharge on October 10, 1945 Roy attended Gem City Business College at Quincy, Illinois where he received his BA degree. Roy began farming in 1949 in the Garden City and Clark, SD area. He went to East Grand Forks, North Dakota for his inspection training. In 1970 he received his federal license and was sent to Bakersfield, CA and was a potato inspector. Upon his return to South Dakota, Roy was inspector and office manager for the South Dakota Potato Growers Association until he retired in 1985. On December 22, 1979 he married Pearl J. (Haaneman) Bergan in the Grace Lutheran Church at Watertown. Pearl passed away on February 1, 1997. Roy married Mary Jeanne (Englert) Holzemer on September 4, 2010 in the Immaculate Conception Church at Watertown. Roy was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church and Memorial Committee, a Life time member of the VFW Post 750 and American Legion Post 17 in Watertown, and was past Commander and Adjutant of Heath Headley Post 119 of the American Legion of Garden City, SD. He enjoyed genealogy, numismatics, antiques, fishing, hunting and playing cards. Roy especially enjoyed traveling. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Pearl, a brother Walter, and one sister Gladys. He is survived by his wife Mary Jeanne; 14 stepchildren, James Bergan of St. Paul, MN, Jerry and Judson Bergan of Sioux Falls, SD, Joseph Bergan of Watertown, SD, Marilyn Begley of New Tripoli, PA, Patricia Safoni of Wauwatosa, WI, David Holzemer of Ft. Worth, TX, Martha Robinson of Casper, WY, Anthony Holzemer of Sioux Falls, SD, Grace Nelson of Crooks, SD, Kenneth Holzemer of Anacortes, VA, Scott Holzemer of Sioux Falls, SD, Virginia Bergstrom of Bloomington, MN, and Daniel Holzemer of Winchester, VA; 23 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.
