Pleasant died Friday evening, July 29, 1988 at the Veteran's Hospital, Knoxville. He was born December 29, 1896, in Lee County to George E and Elizabeth C. May Craig. On November 7, 1937, he married Dorytha M. Simpson, who preceded him in death December 19, 1987. He was a mail carrier for the Mt. Pleasant post office for 33 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Mt. Pleasant. A veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War I, he was a lifetime member and past commander of the Bob Tribby Post 58 of the American Legion, where he had over 57 years continuous service to the organization. He was a member of the 40 and 8 Marise and was a charter member of the World War I Veterans of Henry County. One of the orginators of the Henry County Avenue of Flags he was resposible for placing the veterans flags on graves in area cemeteries until his health failed. He was a ma member of the County Comission of the American Legion post 58. He also preformed volunteer work at the Mental Health Institute and received the Volunteer Service award from the Department of Social Services and the state of Iowa for 18 years of service. He is survived by one son, Robert S. Craig, Hoffman Estates, Ill., one daughter, Mrs. Leonard (Karen) Gerth, Milledgeville, Ill., and two grandchildren. His parents, wife, and one sister, Laura Schwartz, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Auggust 3 from the First Presbyterian Church, Mt. Pleasant, with the Rev. James Edwards of the Winfield Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment with full military honors will be in Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, by the Ameriacan Legion post 58 and Veterans of Foreign Wars post 2561. Visitation will begain 9 a.m. Tuesday August 2 at the Weir Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. A memorial to the Henry County Avenue of Flags has been established in his memory.
