Robbins, who formerly resided in this city The unfortunate young man lived about 30 minutes after he fired the fatal shot and then expired. Roy was 19 years old and was the son of Mrs. Catharine Doud, a widow who resides at 216 Pearl Street, North Defiance. A reporter called on Mrs. Doud Friday morning and gleaned the following facts: Royal was in the employment of Burgland & Shead in the bucket factory in North Defiance then the farm removed to West Pullman, near Chicago. Royal, as he was a valued employee, was offered work in the new factory which he accepted and went to Pullman and worked a short time. He returned to this city last Friday. At the hotel where he stopped a case of small pox had developed & soon after he came here, a report gained circulation that he had been exposed to the small pox and he was visited by health officer Aldrich and Mrs. Doud says he was ordered to return to Chicago. Royal stayed at home until last Tuesday when he left. He did not tell his mother his destination. He appeared to feel much down hearted and frequently made the remark that he "was only in the way" meaning perhaps some relatives and the health officer. When he left he had $10.00. Mrs. Doud heard no more of him until she learned of his tragic death at Bryan. Mrs. Doud is bitter in her denunciation of those who circulated the small pox story and asserts they drove him to his death. The story from Bryan is that young Doud went into Robbins' place Wednesday and purchased liquor and poured something that looked like a drug into the glass. He may have attempted suicide by poisoning. Those who were present Thursday when he shot himself say he came in to the saloon and asked Robbins to advance him some money on a revolver he produced. The proprietor declined and Doud immediately placed the weapon to his head and pulled the trigger Soon after his death the coroner was summoned and returned a verdict in accordance with the evidence it being a clear case of suicide. The boy was probably discouraged and from his manner before leaving home it is plain to be seen that he contemplated suicide and was at last driven to desperation. Will Doud, his brother and J. Clemmons, his brother in law went to Bryan last evening and telephoned Mrs. Doud this morning they would arrive in this city by noon. The Doud family is unfortunate as five years ago a brother older than Royal met death by accident. The body was brought to this city Friday and was taken in charge by undertaker Hoffman. The funeral took place from the residence Sunday. -Van Wert Times, February 2, 1894. Royal was buried in an unmarked grave per the cemetery records.
